My horse had an abbcess a couple of months ago in his toe...that was all treated and fixed fine. My farrier came today to re-shoe as normal and when he had gone I had a good look around his feet as I always do (only time you can see the sole properly without mud on them!). I noticed tha where he has been trimmed you can see the old abbcess hole which is just underneath the front of his shoe. Now it was some time ago and all healed but does it matter that the old hole is now exposed? I am a bit paranoid about something getting in there and causing another problem?
My farrier did not mention anything and as he is good and a remedial trained farrier, he would of I am sure if there was a problem.
Any thoughts..?

It shouldn't be a problem now because it is growing out. It will probably just be a hole in the sole, not in the foot itself. IMHO, leave well alone, is a good course of action with such things. If you are botherd by it you could put some stockholme tar in the hole, very messty stuff though!

It should be fine, however if you are worried that sand from the arena or a small bit of stone may get in plug the hole with a wadge of cotton wool squidged up with solid hoof oil or cornucresine.

You can just pick the plug back out with a hoof pick or shoeing nail when you are done.
