My lovely chap had a stroke last year - treated immediately with antibio, steroid and now Vivitonin twice a day. He is 14 and that is the age our two previous spaniels seriously deteriorated and were PTS . However he is eating well and he is active (fairly) and certainly happy BUT I have recently found a hard lump under his 'armpit' about the size of the plum - firmly attached.

My inclination is just to watch him carefully and on the assumption this is Lymphoma or similar take the necessary step when he tells us to. Terribly sad. Is there any point in taking him to the vet do you think? We dont want him operated on...

My spaniel is 12 and has lots of lumps on him. He had the biggest removed this year - they were just fat - the rest have been left and I just keep my eye on them. If any of them changed or grew dramatically I would go to the vet.

I understand your dilemma as I wouldn't want mine opearated on either. So I suppose what i am saying is keep your eye on them and him and as long as it doen't cause pain or interfere with his walking etc leave it alone.
 
I agree, at his age I would just leave alone. You sound to be a very caring owner, so would just monitor and speak to the vet if it grows considerably or appears to be causing him problems.

Jasper, my dearly loved old man, had warty growths on his ears and a few on his body and legs. He was 14 too when we lost him after a series of strokes in October.

I wouldn't have had Jasper operated on either.
 
14 generally is the age Spaniels leave us, mine was too. Just long enough to claim an irreplaceable part of our lives. I would do what you're doing turbo, and just watch for the signs that will tell you when he's ready to go, it may not be for ages, but as a sensitive owner you will know.

I had my girl pts at home, she was terrified of the vets, I wanted her to go with the comforts and smells of home around her, and it wasn't planned, it was an emergency call out at the time.

I hope your boy carries on feeling well in himself for plenty of time.
