old baths as water troughs in fields - uggghhhh.

just hacked out, found a loose pony (long story) and saw a load of old baths in its field as water troughs.
these always make me cringe. i used to use one to soak haynets on the yard. tied one of my eventers up to wash him, left him for 1 minute to go and get shampoo, while i was gone he pulled back, wandered over to check out the soaking hay, and managed to lacerate his front leg on the lip of the bath, requiring vet visit for stitches. it didn't even seem sharp but he found some way of slicing himself on it!

so, please, if you do use them, please please board round the top or something.
(btw managed to catch loose pony etc.)
 
they are ugly and dangerous.
i have seen them with the taps still on and ponies with headcollers on too.arghhhhhhhhh

The last yard we were at had baths near the gate. The horses were shifting about one day waiting to come in and our old horse got caught in an unsafe gate, slipped and fell into the bath and somehow the bath turned over and our horse put his foot through it.. Resulting in a hole in his suspensory ligament. We were not happy. and left the yard soon after.
 
I had one built up as you do in a bathroom for precisely the danger reason, as long as you make sure there is no edges for horses to damage themselves they are a good solution. They are easy to empty and clean.
 
Our horse was 21 at the time and has previously had a tendon off the bone and then the hole in the suspensory happened. I thought it was the end for him..

We are at a lovely yard now with post and rail fencing and 'real' troughs.

I would never put him in a field with a bath in again. A hard lesson learnt.

If they are easy to empty and clean they are easy to turn over in a scuffle.

It was horriffic watching my old boy struggle, I thought he was going to break his leg.

Not something I would like to see happen again. xx
 
We have some old baths, but we don't use them for water troughs. They are away from the horses and we use them for soaking hay and washing rugs in.
 
The lady who has the field next to me has baths n the field. She is meant to be very highly qualified but obviously has no common sense!
 
Oh I had never heaerd of this problem or thought of it before!! Thanks - will have to get rid off 2 baths from our fields!
