I have an old barn which I have put two stables in but I am now thinking I should have sorted the floor out before I did the stables, the floor is old concrete floor when swept it is very dusty (no matter how much you sweep) it also has a couple of little areas that the concrete has warn away and breaking up.

I had thought I could just leave it and use lots of bedding in the stables, but I am worried about the amount of dust that keeps coming up when sweeping.

The few arrears that are warn away I think I am going to have to try to repair but im worried the normal self levelling concrete will not last long with horses walking on it.

I'm not keen about using rubber mats in the stables as I don’t want urine going under the mats sitting there as no run off and becoming very smelly!

Has anyone got any ideas of what I can do?

I would screed the top and ask them to roughen it slightly.

I have stable with concrete flooring, I use half bedding and half rubber mats (they are massive stables though). Never had a problem with them smelling or urine pooling even though mine are dead flat.

This is what was done at my stables which was old concrete

Screed the top as PC says above, I also had a very slight fall off with a drain hole at the back, so that when I hose or jet wash the stable the water all goes where I want it to in one direction and I am not chasing water around the stable

I ended up with rubber mats covering the floors but that is because mine can have access to the stables in any weather when they are in the bottom paddock and I didn't want them laying on any concrete (Just to make you smile, I have a large concrete area outside the stables and one of them happily stretches out on that on the odd day even with access to the stables)

Is there no fall (run off) at all? I don't have rubber mats and I deep litter my stables which have a concrete floor - maybe this could work for you. The bed is thick and dry and the horses love to get down for a sleep (they have free access in and out)

Regarding the dust when sweeping, dampening the bristles of the brush or the floor will help.

There are paint on sealants that will lay the dust. Depending on your budget, then maybe patch the holes/cracks and then apply sealant. Job done.
