Old dog having accidents

My old (13/14 ish) weim bitch has started having the occasional accident in the house over night. Probably happens once every fortnight on average. It's nearly always in the kitchen/ by the back door so she knows she needs to go, and its probably our fault for not waking up. She never gets told off when she's done it, as it probably is our fault.

I thought about getting some puppy type pads and teaching her to go on those if she does need to and can't get out, but i'm not sure if 1.) It will make it worse as she won't bother trying to get out and 2.) Will I be able to teach her at her age?

Any ideas, or shall we just not replace our very old carpets downstairs for another few years (hopefully)?!
 
You could just put down a cheap rug where she is going and then clean or bin it as needed. We had to do this for ours.
 
Bless her. I would just put the pads there in case, but perhaps not teach her to encourage it. We actually put a large cat flap in for our previous medium sized dog when she got old and couldn't last the night, and she would pop in and out during the night!
 
I'd take her for a check up at the vets. It might be that something like Propalin could help stop her having accidents.
 
Thanks all, a rug or off cuts of carpet (OH is carpet fitter) could well be a good alternative

Honey, thats what I'm hoping, she can use them if she needs to but don't want to encourage her to. I'd love to get her a dog flap, but because (as harsh as it sounds) it's probably not going to be a long term issue I'm not sure its worth it

Superhot, thanks, she is already on the maximum dose of Rimadryl and Tramadol for her arthritis so I'd rather not add any more drugs into her system but if it continues/ gets worse whilst she's still happy in herself I will speak to the vets about Propalin or similar, having googled Propalin, its not always urine so i'm not sure if it will be effective?
 
My 12 year old JRT sometimes has accidents at night even though there is a cat flap, have had urine samples tested, all fine so I put a puppy pad down at night, he doesn't use it every night just occasionally xx
 
Assuming its not an infection (and it doesn't sound like it or it would happen more often surely) I would just try to pad the area as much as you can with something absorbent, an old towel for instance. As you say, it wont be forever and you don't want to spoil the time you have left by making a big drama out of it. If you can live with the old carpet for a bit longer and she is otherwise enjoying life carry on as you are for now.
