Old Dogs With No Teeth Left

I know there are a few people on here with very old dogs and I was wondering how you all fed your dogs; particularly the ones who barely have any teeth left?

My old dog Poppy has her front teeth and her canines but her molars are pretty much worn away now. I have been soaking her food for her and she has seemed to manage okay up till a couple of days ago where although she is still eating, it is beginning to look a bit uncomfortable for her.

Gosh this is so hard for me. I am going to take her to the vet on Monday to get them to check her as she is not right. I know she is old but I just don't want her to leave me yet.

Aww Bless Poppy, I recall Adopting a farm Tom Cat "Leo" he has no teeth at all at the age of 16 and managed to catch chickens and eat it (he was huge cat) But when he reached 18 he started to slow down and had difficulty eating bisicuts so we resorted to Hills senior cat meat (tins) it is quite sloppy then he went back to hunting. I lost him to cancer at 19.

I am sure when you take your Poppy to vets he/she would give you advice anyway. Probably change her diet to tins if you haven't done already.
 
As has already been said, tinned meat. My friends old JR lived for years on tinned Chappie (It's quite good if they have no teeth, as doesn't have lumps), as he got older, they used to loosen if further with warm water and mush into a smooth paste, so it could be lapped up.
 
Hello Tia.My 16 year old collie has all his teeth but he will only eat cat food and cat biscuits but i make a gravy for him with oxo or gravy powder so it is all sloopy and soft for him.He does enjoy that.
 
Our old Lancashire Heeler had hardly any teeth, we used to feed her on tinned dog food. She sometimes used to get quite nasty infections of her gums which used to make eating uncomfortable, this is possibly what is the problem with Poppy.Hopefully your vet will be able to clean them up a bit and give her some antibiotics if this is the case.

MurphysMinder - yes I think that this may be what is happening. I'll get the vets to give her a thorough check all over tomorrow.

She looks very bright this morning so here's hoping that the old dog isn't giving up yet.
 
One of our old girls had to have all her teeth removed when she was 7 due to "spongy jaw", a year later her jaw was fine and she was eating the hard biscuits the same as the others. she loved not having the teeth as she could hoover up far more bonio biscuits than the others, I think her top score was 10!..... she just sucked them to death. I seem to recall that she was PTS at about 13 for reasons not relating to her teeth (or lack of!)
 
My greyhound only has two teeth and they have only been left to stop here tongue hanging out the side of her mouth. She eats she same food as our other dog (who has all his teeth) she just sucks things if they arn't soft, we don't give her anything chewy though!!! She just got used to eating with no teeth and must have hard gums!!
