old english sheep dogs some info please

hi my mum has always wanted an old english sheep dog ever since she was a kid she used to own dogs(not old english sheep dogs or anything big)when she was little because her brother bred them i am just wondering if any of you lot know the pros and cons of having one and what they are like i work at a kennels but have never come into contact with one can anyone help!

We used to have one when I was a kid, he was ace but very smelly and we had to clip him a lot. He was great with us kids.

Big, very bouncy, slight tendency to guard (especially the males) natural herding breed so v bright and can be destructive if not given enough to do - need lots of excercise and can bring most of the outdoors back in with them after a walk - so not for the houseproud

very faithful and trustworthy with 'their ' family - easy to train and usually good with other animals.

BIG downside is that coat ... very thick undercoat that sheds twice a year and needs DAILY grooming ...you can have them clipped out but in my opinion this completely changes the glorious look of the breed ( although it will make it a whole lot easier to care for) - be aware that if you have your OES spayed or neutered the coat characteristics will change and become even thicker and more difficult to care for.

They have alwyas been traditionally docked - although there are some lines with a natural bob tail - docking will be banned after April so most pups available after this date will have tails - this is likely to make grooming even more difficult ( and messy !)

If you like the look of the OES but don't fancy the work involved then look at the Polish Lowland Sheepdog - a smaller look a like with less 'bounce' and although still carrying a big coat, this breed is easier to care for as far as grooming is required .... for both breeds you will need to wait for a puppy and please only go to reputable breeders ( contact the breed clubs or the Kennel Club ) ... expect to pay around £800-£1000 for a well bred puppy.
