What should I do?

My older boy (passport says 21 but we think he is more like 24) has recently been getting stiffer in his back legs. Nothing major, he can still move about fine. I notice it mainly when I first pick his feet out in the morning, he struggles to lift his backs up, he sort of lifts them up quite high and pulls his feet forewards, rather than putting foot out behind him like most horses. Also when he is ridden, though he generally feels very flexible and free, occassionally he will lose a back leg (don't know if this is the correct expression) but we'll be just trotting along and suddenly it is like he forgets to put one of his back legs forwards so he misses a step, but then he goes back to normal again. Also I have been watching him in the field and after he rolls he sometimes looks like it is a real effort to get back up again and takes a few seconds to heave himself up rather than just bounding up like some horses do

So I am worrying he may be feeling his age.

I have him on a joint supplement with a high HA content which has helped the loosing a leg thing but he still has his back leg stiffnesses with feet picking out and getting up etc. Is there anything else I can do? He is still ridden most days though rarely for more than 45mins, though I do a lot of dressage with him so he does work fairly hard in that time. Do you think I need to start easing off his workload? He still has plenty of energy, I think it's a case of the mind is willing but prehaps the body can't keep up as well as it used to anymore.

Have been worrying about this for awhile. Does anyone know any miracle cures to keep veterans going or do I just need to accept that he is getting on in years and ease off with him. Any advice appreciated thanks.

No miracles cures no but have you tried additional oils (ie cod liver etc) or maybe even a change of joint supplement? Linseed can also be quite beneficial I hear as has anti-inflammatory properties.

I would possibly ask you vet, see if they have any ideas or recommendations for supplements.

I have got two oldies that are still regularly ridden and one of them (27) is stiff in the back. I find regular excercise at no more than a walk helps her. She is also on one sachet of Danilon a day and linseed (which is an anti-inflamiatory) cod liver oil and Formula Feet.

Also my horse is very fussy and won't normally eat medication in his food (he just leaves the whole feed), supplement he's on now is one of the few he will eat. Have tried to give him oral medications for various things in the past but he won't touch them!

My OH's mare is almost exactly the same. She is 16 but an ex-point to pointer.

When stiff she appear to be slightly lame at a trot, bringing one leg forward normally, but sort of skipping with the other, this disappears as she warms up. She is the same with regards to having her rear feet lifted, but we are working on a technique where we get her to roll her foot forward, exposing the sole and frog, but leaving her toe on the ground. She seems to quite like this.

We consulted the vet when this started, as originally it began with a tendon injury. Once she was as healed as she will ever be, we put her on a daily dose of glucosamine and also no bute. The vet is happy with this regime and the mare is happy and normal apart from the slight stiffness.

We hack out most days, but we are just a little careful on rocky downhill slopes and also hard / stony surfaces at a canter, although Fol lets my OH know exactly what she thinks of that by going into P to P pony mode (fast and flat with her neck stretched out like a racehorse). However, we were advised not do do very much jumping as this obviously put additional strain on the rear legs.

Additional oils in the feed are good, but watch the fat content and also it can put Fol off the feed, as she does not really like oily dinner!

Hyonate made a massive difference with mine - 20 and still competing. Its expensive but worth it in my case.

I have it done every six months - but you can go a year
