old horses that people get rid of.

the problem is that they ARE hard economic times, and there are so many nice horses available who are happy hacks. And 98% of these horses are younger and healthier. There are so few people who will be willing to take on a horse with the added cost of medication. The horse also looks like it might have other medical issues with its eyes etc. It's great that you would be willing to take on a horse like this, and I wish there were more like you!. But the reality is that most horses in this condition end up in worse and worse homes, and end up hanging around meatman yards, or else being shipped abroad for slaughter, and thats a horrible end for any loved family pet.

The fact is there are not enough good homes to accommodate all the horses in this country. I have been a regular at many low end sales this year and can honesty say the amount of old, poor, lame or just down trodden horses that pass through the rings for peanuts is unbelievable.

The ad looks like its been pulled now so I haven’t seen the horse in question but the chances of an elderly large horse with health issues finding a good home are pretty slim I recon. She may find a good home, she quite probably will not. Pts would be my course of action.

Sadly I think she could end up on the meat wagon straight away. I think it is right to warn people that this can and does happen when horses are given away for free. Free horse-load her up and straight off to the abbatoir. Tell the owners you are looking for a companion of course. Then sell the rugs and tack. £500. Not bad for a days work.

They would be better off taking her there themselves. It is the fact that she is free, with tack and rugs, that actually puts her at even higher risk.
