I measured my boy last night for old macs, he measured at 15cm x 16.5cm. I have just been on their website and it looks as if he would be the largest size and that this could still be a little short in length (the longest length is 16cm).

Has anyone esle had this problem? He is only a lightweight 16.2hh and his feet aren't that big so i'm suprised he'd be the largest size??

The maximum legth for size 8 is 140mm, so I think you would be at severe risk of rubbing the heel bulbs if your horse is 2cm longer. Old Macs aren't suitable for all horses and unfortunately yours might be one of them.

Maybe you could consider different brands, there are lots to choose from.

I'm quite surprise though TBH that your 16.2hh horse is that long in the foot, is it something that could be addressed by trimming over a period of time or is that his natural conformation?

Its the size 10's that i'm looking at, they're 15 - 15.5 cm wide and 15.5 - 16cm long.

He naturally has quite long/flat feet (TB type) and has just had his front shoes removed to allow a peroid of hardening and trimming to try and rebalance and improve the conformation of his foot.

I'll look and see what other brands i could get. He just needs them for stony ground as his soles are quite soft and i don't want him to be continously bruised whilst his feet are hardening up. :-)

Hi,
My horse has used Old Macs for 4yrs now but when I first decided to buy them I had the same problem as my horse's feet where slightly too big for the largest size, my Farrier told me to buy the largest and then he came out when they arrived and simply trimmed and re-shaped the feet to fit- He has done this ever since. So long as there is not a dramatic difference in size then its not a problem. I do have my horses feet done every 5 wks so they always fit but if you leave them a lot longer you will find he will grow too big for them until you have him trimmed again. Something I will suggest, my farrier (remedial farrier for a lot of big competition horses) filed off the front of the tread under the toe of the boots so the horse had a better break over when he walked, mention it to you farrier, he should know what I mean but I must point out that in doing this it does void their guarantee but they are solid things with very little to go wrong with them and it is far better for the horse's gait!

Thanks very much DB, i think i'll go ahead and get the size 10's and go from there. Did you have the G1's? it looks like the G2's already have that part of the tread rasped down which should help but as you say they are tough so i'd be open to the idea of my farrier adjusting the tread as he saw fit to help.

Yes I do have the G1's I think they've improved the G2's but worth getting your farrier to see if there is enough off the front of the tread for the break over. Oh the other little tip is that I put a fine layer of sawdust/shavings in the bottom before putting the foot in, they tend to get a little sweaty so the sawdust soaks up the sweat and stops the sole going softer! Good luck

I've just read it - thats a great tip! I'm trying to get his feet nice and hard so don't want them to have the opportunity to go softer with the boots on. They're arriving tomorrow!
