the horse i look after got bad rain scald over a year ago now , it healed ok but on his hindquarters there are still small patches of skin with no hair on them from where the rain scald was.. is there anything you can do or put on it to help the hair regrow?

Rain scald is caused by a bacterial infection in skin that has been badly compromised by being constantly wet or sweaty. It is likely that a severe infection has so badly damaged the hair follicles in the skin that the hair will never re-grow. But if you try to make sure the horse never gets rainscald again and he has the right feed and management to boost his immune system, it may grow back with time, although it will probably grow back white. You might try one of the feed supplements you can buy that are good for supporting strong hooves and hair.

My mare was 5 when I bought her. She had lived out unrugged for 4 years and has loads of bald patches on her rump. I have tried rubbing various creams in to stimulate hair growth but nothing seems to work. Luckily she is fleabitten grey and it kind of blends in. I am always extra careful with keeping her dry.

As said, it is a bacterial disease ; it is characterized by crusting of the hair and the skin becomes more liable to trauma from grooming instruments and rubbing. It occurs more particularly during periods of rain because wet skin is a perfect environment for ectoparasites. I have 2 mares but only one of them got affected; I guess there is more than one inciting factor. Now, what you want is to keep your horse's skin as dry as possible of course and I have found a lotion that works really well to keep parasites away. It is called derfen and the hair grows back fast
