I really want one burgundy 5'6ish and one green 6'3ftish mesh/holey old school cooler rugs. Do they still exsist? I can't find one anywhere? I thought they'd be perfect for travelling etc in the summer and then under woolen/ticker rugs in the winter. Any ideas? Anyone else still use them? Do they have a proper/better name I can search for? THANKIES XX

ummm if I'm thinking rightly (which is doubtful at this time...) my friend just bought one recently ---- umm hers is red and I think it was from Masta!?

I think they're also called flyrugs sometimes so maybe search for that??

I gots mine from lidl...lol!

Good luck!

What would be the point in travelling in one on its own in the summer?

They only work if layered - the whole point of them was that before we had decent modern fabrics like fleece, the 'cell' like structure created 'pockets' of air when layered under another rug like wool which does not wick well. Thus the horse could cool and dry without getting a chill.

Now we have modern fabrics which a) wick and b) have this 'air pocket' structure as part of the makeup of the fibres in the material, mesh rugs are basically redundant and pointless.

You'd be better off buying a thinner fleece type rug (weatherbeeta do a brilliant one which is fleece over the back and quarters and mesh everywhere else which is great for summer) and a thicker one for winter TBH.....

I remember them being used for travelling & also on racehorses after they've raced a few years back.
I've seen a few on ebay recently. Look under the cooler category in rugs.
Anti-sweat rug is the name they were known by.

I don't like them, no matter what horse or pony I have put them on they always 'hang' of them and slip back.

I agree with spotted cat, the Weatherbeeta ones are great, I had one for Millie but she outgrew it so I sold it. I keep meaning to get her another one.

Here is a picture of one

Amigo also do a good one but I don't think it is as good as ^^^^^.

I have a brilliant Mark Todd one it's navy blue with white binding, the holes are slightly smaller than the ones you mean, but it's the same sort and it's brilliant.

I bought a shires one a couple of weeks ago - it is burgundy (really a dark red) and is like the old fashioned ones. I am sure they had navy and hunter green as well.

Horseware do them
