My horse failed a 5 stage vetting last September due to a minor injury to the superficial flexor tendon. He wasn't lame and had completed Pontispool PN with a double clear 4 days before.
He then had 4 months off and has been in work since February, I have built the work up slowly being very paranoid and probably worrying too much about him damaging himself..
He's now hacking out, going to the beach, competing Prelim dressage, cantering in fields and we popped round our first course of fences for a year last week! The vets were very vague as to what he would be able to do so I didn't get my hopes up. I would love to get him jumping small courses at competition and maybe some XC next year but will just have to see how it goes!

I know many horses go back into full competition without a problem.

Just wondered what your experiences were? Did yours pass a vetting again?

A horse I have known since he was born has had 3 separate tendon injuries, all on the same leg but in different parts of the same tendon, each one with ~9 months recovery. He was at Blenheim CCI*** this year (fell around 4 from home so didn't complete, but his leg is fine!). He'll never make a show pony but he does OI, A and **/***. He'll never be sold so won't have to pass a vetting, but he passes the vet's inspections for the CIC/CCIs.

My boy had an injury to the DDFT in his hind leg about 3 years ago, I had only had him about 9 months and he was 6......he took 4 months of rest and a gradual reintroduction to work and then we just kept building on what we were doing....we have started doing Intros this year, all be it unaffiliated but over the BE courses and I couldn't be happier. He's a super horse and love him to bits. Good luck and hope it all works out for you and keep us posted!

my 5yr old has a hock bone growth which makes her tendon swell just started bringing her back to work thinking breeding with her keep foal vet said like abunion growth, has anyone else had this sort of problem?

My now 7 year old mare sethered her hind leg felxor tendon as a yearling, a bit of a mess and vets didnt know if she'd be sound again.

She came good after all the treatment and hydrotherapy and now does anything we ask of her, we jump, show, dressage, working hunter and have tried hunter trials (not too well she didnt fancy that!) and she's been brilliant, we show in ridden hunter and despite the visible scar across her tendon she does well and its never been commented on.

My tb also had surgery after a field injury causing infection in the tendon sheath and some tendon damage, again hind leg, came sound and has jumped BSJA affiliated since her operation, without problems. She also had hydrotherapy treatment.
She's now doing hunter trials rather than showjumping, loving every minute of it. She had to have surgery this winter for a bone chip on her fore and hasnt done so much of the showjumping since then as she's getting on a bit.

Good luck with your horse some cope remarkably well and touch wood mine are doing brilliantly so hopefully you will be in the same position x

My (then) RC allrounder tore a 2cm hole in her left fore DDFT, right underneath the navicular bone, and also had "degeneration of the cartilage" in the area. She had 18 months off and has been in light hacking work for the last two years, with last winter off. She only got up to a few short canters this summer.

She was originally given a 25% chance of return to full ridden work, which obviously she didn't manage. She's only sound now if kept shod very short-toed and managed really carefully. Any slight tweak is taken very seriously. She'll never school or jump again - she can't always turn a tight circle without the odd lame step.

Luckily she's fantastically safe and sane and makes the perfect happy hack for my nervous mum :)
