I have owned my old boy for years he is in his mid 20's, I would like to take him to some shows this year so i have some good times and good piccys of him as ive tried to retire him and hes having none of it and alot of people have said when they retire they seem to slow down and age very quickly , so i thought to spice up his life maybe so some inhand showing.. He dosnt have the best of conformation but i thought it would be a bit of fun..does anyone show there old boys? xx

give it a go you never know until you try, showing is total subjective, what the judge likes on the day.

aww thank you hes not perfect only for me, flat foot, long backed, hes my baby and he looks so well i just worried about him ''growing old'' so i keep thinking if his mind is working then hopfully he wont shut down. :)

He's lovely looking! I did some showing with a friends horse over the summer, he's 20, we did ridden veteran and a working hunter. No reason to bow out of the other classes if you are just there for fun :) And veteran classes are great if you've got an oldie yourself, you see some cracking horses. Definitely keep him going if you can, if you keep them going they've got years of life left in them.

Good luck!

Yes definately take him to some shows, I think the whole thing of washing, plaiting and going to a party does both the horse and your relationship with them, the world of good. We spend so much time worrying about our golden oldies that FUN is what both horse and owner need. Especially after a long cold winter.

I have a 21 year old warmblood, he's not got the best conformation either (pigeon toe, almost cow hocked...eeek) but he's huge (17.2) and handsome and has an amazing presence. i took him to a few shows last summer and without exception he attracted a huge fan club each time. We were always placed in the ridden veteran and in one case won both that class and then Reserve Champion. I bumped into the judge months after and she said she loved him because he was such a proud horse and although not perfect (??? what???) he was in fab condition, very alive and alert, and had something special (I promise I didn't bribe her).

The point of this story is that, yes, showing is always subjective but sometimes that can be good or bad and if the judge likes your horse then fab, but if not then at least the two of you will have got out and about and had some fun. My boy was so excited at going to one party that he even did a little rear (luckily in car park, not in the ring) - first time ever - I just sat there and grinned proudly. So go for it!!! XX

AWW thank you think you've hit the nail on the head really, i have been mollycoddling him trying to get him to retire thinking it might preserve him life (im so sad)
That all though i love him more than maybe more than my parter :o hehe dont tell him! It takes the fun out of it and clearly he keeps telling me he dosent want to hang up his very expensive every 5 weeks shoeing obsession yet . haha. so i should listen to him, as i used to love taking him sj and he used to love prancing around the mares ''with a look at me attitude'' :)

Aw what a lovely post, go for it! Bet you both have a fab time :)
He looks great, wouldn't know he was in his mid 20s at all and he's a handsome chap.

Dont forget to post piccies of your day out if you go, i love seeing oldies out there showing the young 'uns how it's done. My share is 18 (going on 5) and his sister is 26. Theyve both got tonnes of life in them, and i do think it keeps them young to keep them active and having fun. It's the same as human elderly. If you can keep fit into old age then you will probably cope better than if you sit on the sofa all day.

He's very handsome:)

But please will you sort out your sig, 'tis HUGE! Lovely pics in it though:)

If you C&P the pics into a row in paint, then you can have the whole sig as one jpeg image instead of lots of little ones:)

I have a 20yo who has done more in the last two years than the reast of his life and he thrives on it! We started doing the veteran horse classes at local shows then joined the veteran horse society and have been all over the place. He loves a party and is still fighting fit and well in himself so we have really enjoyed getting out and about. VHS showing isn't all about conformation so their other 'merits' have more of a chance. Get out and give it a go, you don't have to be a member to compete in their classes.
