Hi all,

I was having a think about the days when I was instructed to poultice a foot using bran and epsom salts and wondered whether anyone still did this or had any weird, old remedies for injuries?!

not for injuries as such but we were always told heat the horse from within, rugs were barely used unless it was a really freezing day they had proper winter coats. Now it seems to be everything is rugged and they don't get a chance to develop a proper winter coat even the natives. We had the loan pony last winter and she was rugged with heavy rugs her coat was always flat against the body even with a good scrub and she didn't have that lovely thick coat you can stink your hands into and lose them.

Have to say I miss a proper winter coat!

A bread poultice is very good too. Stockholm tar is great for healthy and sick feet, hydrogen peroxide for thrush. It amazes me how people are suckers for advertising and will happily pay through the nose for something that they know nothing about and turn their backs on tried and tested "old" ways.

I suppose manuka honey would be a good example of an old remedy despite its recent (and entirely justified) publicity. Honey was used by the Romans for treating wounds. Its great for clearing up zits too!
