Hi I'm after some recommendations please, my nearly 10 year old cocker has recently started eating soil, the darker the better. I've briefly spoken to vet , he is very vet aggressive so can't really take him in :-(, she advised perhaps try a multi vitamin in the 1st instance
So can anyone recommend a reasonable one ? He's fed Skinners Salmon and on Yumove and Plaque Off, he's very fit and well in general , still happily competing in veteran agility
Thank you in advance

Not sure if your vets would provide it without seeing the gut but I would ask if we could try a 2 week trial of a gut protectant.
IME soil eating in dogs/horses is more likely to be ulcers or stomach issues than mineral inbalances, especially so in your case as the dog is on a good food source.
ETA I would work on the vet issues now rather than wait until your dog is really ill and needs intervention and bloods etc.

Could always give Nature's best pet nutrition range a try. They do a free trial as well (it's only a few days worth but at least you'll be able to se if he'll eat it!) They have a multi, a glucosamine and omega 3 supplement for pets.

Hi thank you for your reply, that wasn't something that even entered my head so I'll speak with vet this evening . I appreciate what your saying re vet aggression, but he was a rescue/ second hand ;-) and has always been the same he just gets so totally stressed out so even muzzled to make him safe he's so wound up he's difficult to handle and examine :-(

do your vets have times they are open and not consulting? we actively encourage clients to come in at times like that, we leave the door open and client and dog wander in and out with the dogs receiving, treats/praise toys (whatever works for the dog) until the dog is more relaxed, over time we move up to in and out of the consult rooms, staff wandering about back and forth (not looking at the dog) to give the dog sniffing them/receiving treats thrown for them/by hand, to the dog entering a consult room with staff, right up to staff being able to touch the dog-your dogs past does not have to define his future but it can be hard work to change things

Tesco does a good multivitamin supplement. My two have been on them for several weeks along with evening primrose oil capsules. Brochan is also getting Yumove and I would say the supplements have made a difference. Their coats are softer and shinier, they have more energy and Brochan (who is starting to get a bit long in the tooth) has got more of a spring in his step.

What about asking your vet if he/she can give you something to give to your dog to calm him down beforehand. Maybe something like Diazepam? Also, twiggy2's suggestion sounds like a great idea.

I'll have a look at tesco ones guessing the ingredients are on par with some of the others ? Twiggy 2 suggestion very good we have tried this before he will walk in wag take treat off floor but he knows when they want to actually look at him and turns into devil dog :-/
He looks very well in himself very active etc just this soil eating that's odd
