what insurance companies would people recommend for older horses? looking for some insurance for a 17 year old that will be used for hacking and showing (inhand)?
my bf is making an offer today on his potential horse so just wanted to get some quotes. ta

Well I was going to go with NFU last year, when Lance was 17,but they only cover accident, not illness , in any horse over 16.

So I went with Petplan last year who will cover accident and llness.

However they have just changed their policy to only cover illness too!

Its very hard to get accidnet cover for older horses, I have a feeling when it comes to my renewal time in Nov they are only going to cover accident as Lance is almost 19.

can you pm me as I am looking for insurance. I need the liability bit.

I'm with Petplan for April - she's over 20

The Glasgow vet school recommended them as good at paying out for claims! She is only covered for external injuries though.
Would be interested if anyone has found better coverage for the oldies lol.

Between the ages of 16 & 19 KBIS pay 75% of vets bills for accident & illness up to £3,000 per incident plus 100% for colic.

This was the best I could find as others would only cover accidental external injury at that age.

BHS Gold membership gives you public liability insurance for any horse you own or ride I think.

Petplan have just changed at least one of their oldies policies - now if you insure before age of 20, they will provide full cover for accident AND illness until 25 which is pretty bloody good! sadly my horse is already 21 as i went with KBIS because they were offereing the best cover at the time, but now he's on accident only (11.46 a month)

I just got a quote off them last week for this deal, and they said they will only cover accident, not illness.

that;s not what their advertisements say. few people on SU have said they've got full cover. if you go onto the petplan main site, there is a big pop-up advertisement saying full cover till 25 as long as insured under the age of 20. if they're not actually offering this when people enquire, then that is false advertising.

I'm currently looking for insurance for my old neddy too, was quoted £8 pm by NFU, which I thought was pretty good as we're currently paying nearer £25 pm with petplan, but she can only be insured for £250 because of her age. Covers vets bills up to £3000 and loss of horse, as my insurance on the other apparently covers the other liability and accident bits
