My boy isn't what I would consider drastically old (17) and is still pretty happy in what he's doing...we hack about 3 times a week and then some schooling and jumping about twice a week. He gets at least 2 days off a week.

I was just curious as to what people would recommend in terms of joint care for a horse as they get older.

Riding today and although D put in 110% a few things just didn't feel right. So any suggestions tbh would be great...I've never really had an "older" horse before.

ETS: If anyone wants to know anything more about anything in order to reccommend stuff please just ask!

My old boy is 29 and he gets Codlivine with joint supplement which suits him fine. My other horse is 13 and he gets Cortaflex as he is a dressage horse and I give as a precaution only. The Codlivine is cheaper!!

My horse has had bone spavin from aged 10.

I would recommend Cider Apple Vinegar and Cortaflex.

Allow extra warm up and cool down time and avoid work on hard ground. Maybe consider magnotherapy boots too.

Mags is 20 now and has a touch of arthritus (TBH what old shire doesn't) and he gets codliver oil and is out as much as possible to keep him limber, we're now being a bit more careful with his work too. Unfortunatly he's a bit large at the moment which isn't helping him but he seems well enough. If he does seize up he gets some bute too.

I'd recommend Extraflex HA (my horse has been on this for a long time with great results). I have compared Extraflex HA to other major brands by trying him on them for months at a time, with limited success compared to the Extraflex. Blue Chip dynamic (or a similar feed balancer) might be an option, which should contain enough of the beneficial ingredients as a preventative measure. It's important to check quantities of Chondroitin, glucosamine, MSN, HA etc, and I think molecule size influences things!

Thanks everyone!

Rode again today and there didn't seem to be anything wrong at all...maybe just an off day!

Am thinking about starting him on something when the colder weather sets in though.
