Does anyone know if these older trailers use the same wheels as the Landrover Defenders, cannot seem to locate an original Rice one, the spare off mine is missing, and came across one on Ebay thats said for a defender or a Rice Trailer, but just wanted to check before buying one!

I have one of these trailers...

What size tyres are currently on the trailer... old (ie 70's tyre sizes) or modern tyre sizes?

I have those on mine. I think they're series (pre Defender) Landrover wheels. tyres are a pain to get hold of; I managed to find a set of four on ebay for mine. I'm sure you must be able get metric sizes to fit though.

Yes those are the older ones. I am no wheel expert, but I would suggest you will be better off putting one with that rating on the spare. I got mine from here: http://www.vintagetyres.com/

There are modern equivilants... tbh I would suggest you get them all changed over. What happens if you have more than one puncture. When the breakdown comes out, they wont be able to put a new tyre on for you, because they wont be able to get hold of one...

Yep, those are the ones, so the definitley fit the trailers then? Its only for a spare wheel, but you never know when you might need one!

They fit. The original tyres are crossply. It is illegal to mix crossply and radial tyres on the same axle. I really ought to get a new tyre for my spare wheel as it's radial and the tyres on the trailer are crossplies. Oops! Thinking about wench's comment re. not having a second spare, I might mount another one on the other side. Be cheaper than replacing four tyres!

No fear of that. Absolutely nothing 'collection only' comes up anywhere near to me!

It took a great deal of organising to get my tyres collected from Melton Mowbray and taken to Taunton. Luckily the seller was really helpful and hung on to them for a couple of weeks. I no longer know any sales reps.:(:p:D

Same here, even when looking at Trailers there was absolutely nothing local!

One of the reasons why I sold my Rice trailer is that to get the tyres new (which are a ****** to get hold of) are about £100+ each. I ended up buying a part worn one on Ebay for £60 and getting one of my SIL's mates to put it on the wheel for me. My friend's husband used to be in the army and he said that they are old Land Rover Defender tyres and that they used them on the vehicles that he used to drive.

Ring my OH as he is expert on Rice ....
I'll pm you his number....
Some used a 16 inch landrover wheel,
some had 16 inch 4 stud wheels
some had 15 inch 5 stud
some had 13 inch 4 stud
and some 14 inch 5 stud.

Do you know your model ....

This age of trailer you can only go with whats in front of you. Mine is on 15" wheels and the studs don't take landie wheels. Answer, change landie centres for trailer centres in landie rims. A bit of packing required. Don't like that and can afford it go for new axles which gives you new bearings, brakes etc and puts you in to modern wheel and tyre sizes as used by Ifor Williams. It is very likely that your old trailer axle has some very nasty surprises. The brackets on mine were paper thin and welding near rubber suspension blocks is a tetchy business unlikely to improve them. Its advice I was given which I wish I could afford to take. Allow for the cost of this in what you offer for the trailer and prices might get more realistic, and trailers safer.

This is interesting as I've just bought a Beaufort too!
