Hi there, are there any older riders out there who are just starting out again???? My daughter does not have enough time to ride her 16.3 showjumper as much as usual and asked me to hack her horse out. We have had horses since i was 9yrs old but ive not ridden for last 3 years ive just left it to her

Need some advice an moral support!!!!!

My friend at work has just recently brought her first horse - at 43! She rode a lot as a child but then teen years came and she stopped riding. I think she has found it hard work - but she is absolutely loving having her own horse.

Go for it!

Go for it - its never too late to start again.

I had many years off riding when I was too busy working and then had my children, but got back into it when their ponies needed exercising during the week.

WOW!!!

Thanks for all your support i only went out for few mins an came back to all your posts!!!! I really want to do it but suppose i just needed alittle reassurance.

Oh tell me about getting off! I now position myself over a large bale of woodchips if I can, and land as softly as my body weight will allow. It's the part I dread most, in fact falling off couldn't be much worse!

Start gently, just walk round the manage the first time, lots of confidence building stuff, and it will all come back, just like riding a bike

Suggest little & often to start with until your body gets used to it again and then go for it. The worst part of being older is that you become much more risk averse!

I think thats the problem as well, im being a wimp and thinking the worse which is not going to help the horse, i cant believe what i used to do and now im getting butterflies just going out on hack!!!!

I know you're only planning to hack, but would a quick MOT of your position etc from a MATURE instructor or knowledgeable friend help you feel more confident?

Once you get going you'll be fine - I have to nag my OH (53) like hell to ride in the winter especially but he feels so much better for it and the doctors are seriously impressed with how much his improved fitness helps a chronic chest problem.

I stop next to a gate throw my leg over and climb down the gate backward leaning agianst the horse and sowly reaching the ground, its the jarring that hurts , mainly if the horse spooks, agony .

Thank you all for your support im now officially starting to get fit an lose alittle weight so i can get back into the saddle!!
Will keep you all posted and prob give you all plenty of belly laughs at my attempts to hack round our local village

I'm 41 and last year (call it a mid-life crisis) I decided to do more with my life, after all life is supposed to begin at 40! I have had a horse on and off for the past 10 years but I decided to start competing!
I have had loads of support from people on here and at the little competitions that I've done. I am proof that you are never too old to try something new. My advice is not to take things too seriously - be prepared to laugh at yourself a bit and take the time to enjoy what you are doing!

I am 41 and I got back into riding about 6 years ago after time out being a city chick/career/marriage/kids the usual.

Last month I achieved my ambition to ride 100 miles in one day. Women just get tougher with age.
