Oldest horse you've known/owned?

Oldest one was Toby at the National Equine Defence Society in Yorkshire. He was aged around 34! he was pts after having a heartattack and couldnt get back on his feet but up until then had been the "seeing eye" pony for another pony who had been blind and was also a companion to a 30 year old shetland.

And at the moment Milo who is a welsh x is currently 33 and is still the boss in a field full of gypsey cob colts!!

The first horse I rode and the horse I learnt to ride on was a welsh mountain pony. He was a real character- he passed away at the grand old age of 41yo. I rode him well into his 30s and he still bucked with joy when we came to canter!

i second this!!! mine was a friends dartmoor called Bonnie...second eldest to only one- her sister!! Gemma. Both passed away well into there late 30's.

Not the best photo but its only one i have on PB, Polo is nearly 39 and as strong as an ox, she`s such a sweetie, she was bitten by an adder in the summer and came through it fine :) Had colic last week, this week she`s galloping around the field playing nanny to the youngsters :)

42 year old connie mare. Would still drag you through the fields to be taken out. Would not be stabled and it was a trek to retrieve her from the main field into the front field each winter (bought in so she could be rugged/fed).

Every winter the owner would say "this year". Nope. she eventually fell and broke her shoulder so had to be pts.

Theres 2 old riding schoolies on our yard, both must be well in their 40's but still enjoy "nannying" the younger horses

A little pony at the yard was 57 years when he went.I remember this as I was always amazed that he was older than my dad at the time!! He was grumpy and just wandered about, but what a life!

There was a mare who reached approximately 35 at my old livery yard. She was wonderful, the yard pet, and still towed everyone to and from the field well up until her dying day. She passed away in the field in her sleep, and her field mates stood guard over her body. Fairly perfect. I still miss her when I visit my old yard.

Two of the school ponies at my first riding school were in their mid 30s. There was a CB at my yard that was either 36/37 and I stood with a dear friends old mare recently as she was pts, she was about 39/40ish. All were pts, one with general organ failure, two colic, and one who had very bad arthritis and was put down on a sunny day at the end of the summer.

We have two stallions at work aged 28 and 30, both Welshies.

Both had mares who've foaled this year and are running out with two each this year.

My old boy was late 30's when he went! I wonder if anyone knows when...I was so young when I loaned him, that I was never told when he died. Seems I may have to start a new thread...

The pony I learned to ride on as child called Gem is currently 48 and still going strong! She still enjoys a good potter around the field and has been happily retired from riding for many years! Shes one indestructible pony.

Topsie was a 10'2 Heinz 57. She lived to be 47. PTS as she can cancer. Brilliant pony to learn with. Last three years was on 4 meals a day, as much hay she could manage and limited grass. Still be used for very small light children up until a few months before she was put down. Could never retire her, too full of beans! She was also PTS with her boyfriend of 18 years who was 35. Nice they could go together... V sad though.

my gorgeous pony pepsi is the grand old age of 32. Shes been enjoying her retirement for a good few years but my son still tootles about on her now and then and she loves it. Ive owned her for 20 years and she's been a super little girl and she'll stay with me till the day she dies. Shes taught me so much...its the least i can do for her :)

A horse at the yard i brought my mare off 12 years ago died about three/fourish years ago in his late thirtys, Hamish was a lovely boy......i have to friends one with a 28yo and another with a 26yo and one other with a 31yo mare that acts like she's two and doesnt show any signs of stopping.....my 21yo is the same, i never got the idea that the older the horse the more sensible:rolleyes:

Known a few little ponies who lived until they were in their 40s. My mum used to have a Thoroughbred until we sadly lost him aged 31!! And we currently have a rescue pony who must be nearing 40! :)

My old boy is 30 and still going strong. He'd still be in light work if I had someone light (and strong!) enough to hack him out. But instead he just spends his days winding me up with his cheeky ways and aversion to being caught or standing still for more than 5 seconds.

We've got a 40 year old 16hand Clydesdale X on our yard. Belongs to the yard owners and was last ridden towards the end of 2011.

He's in amazing condition and is grandad to the foals and youngsters we have on the yard.

Nobody ever believes his age from looking at him!

My personal oldest was my old IDxTB who was 35 when I lost him to severe arthritis. He was hacking out until two days before PTS.

Love the oldies. :)

I had to have Snowy (the pony in my avatar),Pts last year at the age of 42. She was amazingly fit and healthy for that age, and still had the majorit of her teeth. Unfortunately she went down and couldnt get up one day. She was one in a million and I had owned her for 26 years. (She was around 35 at the time of the piccy)

My parents have had a couple who got to about the 40 age one died in field other was pts very peacefully, oldest we have at the moment are a couple in twenties still in work and a 25yr old tb still very much in work.

He is doing common rides fun rides all summer and will be hunting this winter he is a manic weaver looney tunes at times much more stupid than some of the youngsters.

Keeping him active helps with his condition alot.

Our blue cross adopted horse lived to a great old age of 36, and at 32 was pulled from a ditch by a tractor as he had fallen in overnight, walked away fine. He died in the field, found at the bottom of a little hill under the fence, either fell and couldn't get up or had a heart attack and fell, who knows :( His donkey friend who was ageless and ancient and little pony friend who no doubt was closer to 40 were put down in the months previos and I think he never really got over it despite having field buddies :(

Current oldie is a 28 yo TB.
