My old chap now can't last the night without going for a wee - know the problem! Anyway, I've been leaving the door open so that he can wander in and out during the night for a pee. I'd be quite happy to leave the door open through the winter but the OH is already saying we can't have it open in the winter when it's freezing and the heating's on blah blah blah. I guess I could get up a few times in the middle of the night to let him out but when I did this before I got knackered and eventually was so fast asleep I didn't hear him wanting to go out and so the poor thing had to have a wee inside. What would you do?

When I had this issue with my old dog, I brought him into the bedroom to sleep at night. That way he could wake me if he needed to go out.
If I had to leave him inside during the day, I put newspaper down by the back kitchen door and he learnt to wee on that if he was desperate, and I just cleaned up .

I'd had my dog 17 years, so I felt it was the least I could do for him :(.

I would take him into my bedroom Anonnymouse but he's too big to carry upstairs and too rickety to make his own way up.

I used to get my OH to carry him up the stairs:D

You could use a baby monitor perhaps . I know someone who does this for her elderly dog who sometimes need a wee in the night.

Could you train him to go in one spot? And buy some disposable incontinence pads/sheets to use? Just chuck it away in the morning.

My old boy used to get ever so upset at weeing indoors though :-(.

This is an interesting one for me also although my old boy can still last the night but he is quite lazy at going out and sometimes he just wees and doesn't realise he is doing it, we have to be really strict at plonking him outside for a wee and even though he may be busting he will just stand at the door wanting to go back inside, he is refusing his food also which is very worrying.

Leave them in a smaller area for over night, at present they possibly have a senile wonder around:D and pish on route, they may settle the night a bit better if you section off a smaller area, a one which they can literally only curl up and sleep in, if my oldie was left downstairs in the kitchen she would on occasion piddle, in her crate she stayed dry, feed the last meal early as possibly and maybe also only leave a measured amount of water for the night time hours.
Someof the dogs in the post may be incontinent, so a trip to the vet for some meds.
