Well my darling Rocket turns 34 later this week, and I never in a million years thought I would have the pleasure of being with him for this long :)

To think, when I joined here, I was looking for advice on PTS, because I was worried he was slipping, and yet he is still happy and healthy. :)

Who else has got an oldie? What did you used to do with them/what do you still do with them?

I take him for walks quite regularly(dressed in tinsel on Christmas Day :))and do lots of grooming etc.

Back in the day, we just had good old fashioned fun, all the time and he turned his hoof to anything. I think we would be scorned at for being dangerous nowadays, but hell, it was fun at the time!! :D What kind of things did you do back in the day that you can't get away with now?

I got my old boy 10 years ago when he was 19, so he's 29 now. He's still in light work (when I get time to ride) & I think he's become naughtier as he's got older - or maybe I let him get away with it more now

I used to do a little bit of everything with him, he was a point & shoot jumper, and is very well schooled with beautiful paces, but was a nightmare to take to shows so we hardly ever got placed!

After I'd had him 8 months, he broke his shoulder - he shattered his scapula, and we never thought he was going to recover from that - 9 months later we were out doing hunter trials :D

Although it IS terribly rude of you to forget to post a pic of the birthday boy

My boy was 26 last month. He has a slave who has been riding him for the last 15 years. They hack out and he behaves terribly in front of the younger horses

He has bad teeth, bilateral cataracts and was diagnosed Cushings last month. But he's still rocking.

If I could have one wish, it would be to turn the clock back so we could enjoy another 21 years together :)

One of my retirement residents is 31, he could be 33 or so im told, he is amazing for his age, he is arab and he looks like he will be here well into his 40's :D

Aw, Best Wishes for your boy's 34th :)

Flame is 32, AFAIK based on buying her as "about 12" twenty years ago. She doesn't do anything except be a good friend to other horses and hang around with me. She used to jump but threw the towel in about five minutes after I bought her, went lame shortly afterwards and was diagnosed with navicular back when it was an incurable disease  She's my baby and I think she's fabulous even though she's a miserable old boot who has mastered letting me know she thinks I'm about as significant as the dirt on her shoes. :o :D

That's amazing. Must have been such a lovely feeling getting back on and going again when you never expected you would!!

Lol, I know, you would think they calm down with age. Rocket can still bomb around with the best of them! I share your wish :(

Naww, let's hope the next (at least) ten go just as well for him :)

Thanks :) He says thanks too!! Lol I think Flame deserves to be miserable at that age!!

Out of interest, does anyone know the ratio of horse to human years? If there is one?

:D HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROCKET :D Sending you over a huge big carrot cake

It's very nice to hear about all those old companions that are still in such good shape! ;)

Mine isn't as old as yours, but she'll be 23 next sunday. I hope she'll do as good as yours.

She's still very energetic and as crazy as I love her.

My mare is 21 but a friends horse is 29 today but to see her off riding you would think she is 5! Still does the xc jumps round the yard on her.

I've had my boy for 17 years having bought him from his last owner to stop her having him shot due to him being lame :(

Left him for 3 weeks, as per her vets instructions, and went on to do SJ (tried stressage but was waaayy to much stress for both of us), XC and showing - got to the regional finals of the VHS series in 2009 so very proud of him.

He's now 37 and been retired for a year. Going blind in both eyes and a bit stiff but other than that, fighting fit. Am so proud of my boy :)

Pepsi is beautiful Laura :) That's lovely that your son rides her too!

Thanks :) she is a very pretty lady! I never thought for a second when i bought her when i was 13 that she'd still be around for my 8 yr old son to ride 20yrs later lol, she's like a duracell bunny.....she just goes on and on ;)

My oldies lottie is 32 today. She retired 2 years ago but only stopped pottering about with friends kids last autumn. I've ridden her every xmas day for the 17 years we've been together. She nanny's young or nervous horses, eats treats, gets groomed and cuddled. Losing some sight so walks in hand are scary not a treat So we don't bother. Last weekend I caught her cantering round the field leaping and broncing so the arthritis can't be too bad at minute!

Allah said, ""I create thee, Oh Arabian. To thy forelock, I bind Victory in battle. On thy back, I set a rich spoil and a Treasure in thy loins. I establish thee as one of the Glories of the Earth... I give thee flight without wings."
