Am I the only one that thinks its nuts and a HUGE waste of tax payers money to do the 2012 in Greenwich on a temporary basis

Why the hell aren't they building a permenant facility that could be used for WEG and give us another competition centre

Is there anyone we can campaign to stop the fools from doing the Greenwich thing (Inside the LEZ no less!)

Totally agree. This is a prime opportunity for somewhere like Stoeleigh to be developed so that we have a national center for our equestrian sport on a world level not just a few huts in the midle of some park land.
It would bring us on a par with Germany for example.
Having been involved in the dutch WEG when they put it on a temporary site with unproven 3 day and endurance coarses it was very nearly a disaster and it was a HUGE waste of money.
Looks like we are heading the same way.
London for gods sake ,what a night mare to get in and out of its enough of a problem as it is without the added complication of trying to work within the low emission zone.
Ok for those with modern and new lorries but a lot of the logistic people , which will be huge as it is temporary will have to add the costs of compling to the cost of construction as i am sure not all of them will comply.
It one big joke, poorly thought out. I mean, this government with it 'dome' fiasco is hardly holding it head high in the' good idea well implimented' stakes!!

Yes very stupid idea

Completely agree especially when there are already facilities like HIckstead and Addington which would need a whole lot less money spent on them but would then leave some sort of legacy from the games.

This was where they had the equestrian prt of Sydney Olympics, its still going strong and is used for everything from training camps to agricultural sales.

It's ludicrous I agree!

But can you tell me anything this government have done which has been to the benefit of equestrian life in general? They certainly wouldn't think of changing their ideas now; they assume equestrians are elitist!

its a joke. but after all remember the dome and what a good use of money that was ??? londons a daft place to have it anyway why not more central ???

I have to agree this is ridiculous!!
The only thing i can think of why it is Temp. is the goverment are terrified it will end up like the Millenium dome ..pants...and not get used...they really should do some market research or a poll and see how many of Britains (and abroad) riders would use a fantastic Olympic level complex...I would!!!!

It would also open up jobs and allsorts dont you think??

Oh so does that mean im an elitist because im a horsey Gal!!???
cool.gif
HA!!!

Yep! We're all elitists didn't you know? Wish they could see my bank balance, they might change their mind then...................... and I can't claim my TV license or food on expenses either!

Actually, and to go against the grain somewhat, I don't agree!

The whole point of the equestrian sports being in Greenwich as I understood it was because the equestrian sports were seen as elitist and not every truly 'part' of the games. There has been a long running campaign to get them removed form the games all together by parts of the IOC. Therefore the decision was taken to base them in London, on a temporary site but in close proximity to other aspects of the games, thus meaning that the people there to see the other events would be more likely to see the equestrian events too as they did not have to travel to the. It was designed to make the equestrian events feel more 'part' of the games than they normally do, and to prove they could be inclusive.

Yes, it's a shame we don't have the legacy as equestrian athletes ourselves, but if it comes down to it, how many of us will ever be good enough to compete at world class facilities (as in need the practice because we have to do it when we go abroad) as opposed to just needing somewhere like the big show centers we already have? Not many of us really....

When you balance that against losing the equestrian disciplines for good, as was being discussed I believe, then I can see the sense in having them based on a temporary facility in London.

How many people in this country ride? How much money do central or local government put into this at any level, other than the occasional improvement of a bridle way? Given the amount of money that is put into a number of other sports to encourage young competitors a permenant site would have been a step in the right dierction IMHO
