Omega rice vs equi-jewel

I’m considering adding a rice bran to my boys feed. He’s 18 and is a 17h thoroughbred. He’s always been thinner than I’d like and he’s currently on Alfa a oil chaff, Saracen re-leVe mix and fibre beet. He also gets ad lib haylage. I’m unsure whether to fork out for the equi-jewel or just to go for the omega rice. Are they similar or is it better to get the more expensive?
Has anyone had any success with either of them?

The equijewel is the better product as 18DE vs only 13DE for Omega. That’s the same as your Releve mix. Personally I would get linseed oil and add that as will give you the calories without adding feed bulk.

I can’t remember why I favoured Equi Jewel over Omega but at the time I thought it was the better product.
Ive had success with two different horses with Equi Jewel and would be my go to if I needed to put weight on a horse.

I used to feed micronised linseed to my oldie which is good value as the bag lasts ages. When he needed an extra boost I gave him Equijewel which was excellent at adding condition and although expensive you don’t need to feed large amounts. I believe Omega Rice is a mix on linseed and stabilised rice bran so I didn’t see the point of adding more linseed.

Both good products but I go for omega rice as prefer the combo of rice bran and linseed.

Omega rice only works out a little cheaper to feed if you work it out on just calories (14de compared to 18 for the EJ).

Omega is higher in protein than EJ. EJ is higher in oil than Omega.

I've only used Equijewel but on quite poor horses but it did put condition on and it didn't take long with not huge amounts either.

You might find once you get the horse to the weight you want you can manage it without the Equijewel, that's what we did I think we literally only bought a few bags and that was enough.

I used Equi Jewel as well on a poorly horse who lost lots of condition. It worked really well. Took him off it once back to good health and condition. Haven’t used Omega rice

He doesnt really like linseed oil. He ends up leaving his feed if its in there so ive taken i tout again. He was on that too

Had phenomenal results putting weight and condition back on my poorly TB last winter with Re-Leve and EquiJewel. Haven't used Omega Rice, so I can't compare. The EquiJewel did not add much feed bulk as it was only a cup or so per feeding.

How long did a bag last for you. I need to do most cost effective as well as most fattening and weight up if i can do it due to having two horses. Obviously ill do whats best for my lad

I don't recall exactly how long each bag lasted. My guy was on it for maybe four months and I purchased perhaps four bags? So roughly maybe a month? Worth it though. He does just fine now on Re-Leve and good quality forage, but I wouldn't hesitate to put him back on the EquiJewel if he needed a temporary boost.
