Just musing really....At two yards I work at we have 3 horses being treated for ulcers.

Ive been led to believe that its best given on an empty stomach which one is but then its fed straight after- Is this ok?
Two get paste one gets granules- Which is best?
Only one gets ad-lib hay and tbh he never touches it much, will he eat it if needed? I mke certain he never runs out but I mostly chuck it away.
The other has haylage (again I think this is not good?) and constant access to a molassed lick block- I commented I don't think this is a good idea but then I see advice on here to mix omeprazole in with molasses and syringe it in so they cant be that bad?

Ive don't lots of researching off my own back as I have concerns about my own horse who windsucks and especially since caring for these horses but with owners having different ways of dealing with it Im getting slightly confused as to whats actually best.

My vet advised to give before breakfast (so on an emptyish stomach)
Molasses is no good for any horse.
Haylage can cause issues do to its potential acidity. It really depends on the haylage and the horse.

I gave mine in his breakfast. Like yours he isn't a big hay(lage) eater so his stomach wouldn't have been full, but with ulcers you don't want an empty stomach ever, that just splashes the acid around onto the lining. Can't see that it makes any difference giving it on an empty stomach TBH, it is a proton pump inhibitor so not dependant on lining the stomach.

The reason it is suggested to give on s empty stomach as both the granules and gg are enterically coated, which protects the omrprazole for a certain amount of time from the stomachs acid if the drug isnt out of the stomach by this time then it will be broken down snd wasted.

The horses should eat st least 2% of there bodyweight if they don't then maybe they do not like the hay being fed.

If your feeding the granules molasses is the best way to feed it as it doesn't melt the coating on the granules but I'm talking a small amount. I would not allow a lick.
