Omeprazole and feeding

My horse has been put on 1/4 of a tube of UlcerGold (omeprazole) every day as a maintenance drug to prevent his ulcers coming back.

The vet advised to give it to him an hour before feeding.

Previously I was told to give him 1/2 a scoop of chaff 30 mins before riding to act as a buffer in the stomach. If I give him the omeprazole at the same time as the 1/2 scoop of chaff before riding and then give him a proper feed around 60 mins later, after we’ve finished the ride, do you think that’s ok? Or will the 1/2 scoop of chaff given at the same time as the omeprazole affect the absorption/effectiveness of the paste?

I've fed omeprazole successfully (going by the change in the horses) twice, and always put it in the food.

That's an expensive preventative, BB. If you haven't tried it, you could look at aloe vera which has been shown to do quite a good job in a proper trial and worked really well on one of mine.

I’m absolutely not going against your vets advice, but I figured (with my vets ok) my horse was never without food anyway, so I fed the omeprazole with his normal chaff feed. I figured a scoop of chaff wouldn’t make a difference when he was on ad lib hay. I also put the sucralfate in the same feed, which most people on here say you aren’t supposed to do. Unless I got up at 4am to start feeding before work it just wasn’t realistic to do otherwise. Worked fine for mine, scoped clear. As a human you can take it with or without food.
