I think these people have been incredibly brave in making public such a heart breaking mistake! Its so easy to say-'well Id never do a thing like that blah, blah'.They didnt think so either. Greed doesnt come into it in my opinion-if you breed horses to make a living you may dream of making the bigtime but you live hand to mouth most of the time. The vet care of the mare seems exemplary to me and will have cost a small fortune-the following costs for the foal will probably have cost more than the foal will ever be worth. Until you find yourself in such a harrowing position, you have no idea as to what you would do , so I think these generalised comments of how 'cruel, horrible' etc these people are should be kept to oneself. I think I might have done the same in order to save a viable life, but hopefully i'll never have to find out. Mairi.
PS; I have sent a letter of support to the owners and it would be nice if others could do so too!
You have got to be joking Mairi - write a letter of SUPPORT to these idiots - absolutely no way. It's all very well saying they are incredibly brave to make their admissions in public - but they were responsible for a live animal, one who had already suffered when carrying her previous foal. Yet they chose to put her through yet another pregnancy.
The whole story makes me feel sick to the bottom of my stomach, it really does. To see that poor mare trussed up like that, unable to move, having to have wraps to catch her wee etc. They should have been locked up for animal cruelty at the very least.
I think what happened was really sad, and yes the mare was not comfortable but this was not animal cruelty in my opinion- they made a mistake which was based on advice of the vets- the vets obviously said they could continue so they did. I can understand how hard it would be to make such decisions about the foal- it seems hipocritical to say they should have both been put to sleep when people are so against testing on enbryos- saying they are living beings/against terminations for the same reasons.
I dont think they should of foaled from her, but it was a mistake, and they did what they could to deal with it. I feel sorry for the mare and beleive she is in a better place now.
no, Im not joking! They sought vet advice before having her covered again and were given the go ahead-Im sure most breeding farms would have done the same. As these people have said, no one seems to know why it happens, if it will happen and to what extent the pasterns will give. Im sad that it happened and would be sad if it was a cow or a ewe, the problem is, if it happens to a horse we all become incredibly emotive!
I dont think these people are 'idiots'-they made a decision and it went wrong-they then tried to save a new life. I looked after a broodmare who's pelvic ligament collapsed-her belly was tied up for weeks, otherwise it would have been touching the floor. She was put down after she foaled a beautiful little colt who went on to race NH. He was good at it too!
As for the trussing up-slings have been the saving of many an equine life and many have spent months in one .
I thought it was bad enough reading that first link but then I saw this-
"Steve and Patty knelt beside Tui. Steve had been Tui's vet (as well as Tui's dam's vet) since she was born in 1985. He had been with me all through Tui's star-crossed life: a minor bowed tendon as a yearling, bi-lateral suspensory track injuries in her front legs when she was 3, various bumps and bruises from a jumping and eventing career, after-care from bi-lateral ankle surgery at Oregon State University when she was 10, her first pregnancy at age 15 when she twisted her colon and had surgery at Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital, after care from that and then, her first foal; pregnancies and births of her second and third foals; hind leg problems concerning the dropped pasterns and now, her fourth foal, and her finally struggle."
The mare had previous leg problems-should she have been bred from at all?
Sometimes I do wonder about people! The extremists in both camps! I have to say I have had the mis-fortune to work with broodmares who have suffered far more than this poor mare did - and those cases WERE about GREED!!!! Mares who insurance companies - on the advice of specialists vets - would allow to be PTS!! Unfortunately it does happen - at least her owners loved her, even if they were misguided

she should have been PTS and out of pain

I must have misread - I thought it said that the mare was on Banamine?

I am unsure but with the injurys and infection on her legs and being held in a sling for almost 3 months it's got to hurt, people on pain relief still get a lot of pain
For me the alive and kicking in front of you has to come first i couldnt do it to one of my horses that much i know, sad for them all but couldnt do it
Im not sure what to say about this, In hindsight its easy to say they shouldnt have put her in foal again ( i wouldnt have), but they sought professional help and were advised the mare would be ok to put in foal again, I agree that when she first started showing signs of her pasterns dropping again she should have been PTS then, however at 9 months I dont think I could have had her PTS knowing the foal was so close to arriving, Admititly the mare did suffer and should never have been in that situation but i believe they loved her and cared for her and the foal devotedly. Its a sad story with only a partially happy ending as the poor mare didnt live to raise her foal. I dont think it was greed on their part, I think they made an ill advised decision, one that they will regret forever.
yes i see this, i think that it was wrong to put the mare infoal again after what had happened to her with the last preg's, and to see the pic's of her going on in a sling was just to much and the sight of her poor legs just to carry another foal, one word sick, I could never do this to any of my ponies i dont know how people can live with there selfs after doing something like that
oh for Gods sake!!!!!!!!! This wasnt a deliberate action-it happened as things do happen! This is not a perfect world and worse things happen every single day-should we crucify everyone who has made an honest mistake? If we did, there would be very few people around. Can we all stop being so bloody dramatic about things-this was NOT a deliberate act of Cruelty. Im begining to hate the armchair judges of this world
that poor horse.if that was my mare personally i would have had her PTS in foal or not.
the pain that horse must have been in with those legs must have been awful.
personally i wouldnt have put her in foal, even if a vet or people on the net said it was ok.and i certainly would have put her down once it happened again as badly as that.
poor thing.they were very selfish keeping her alive-even if it was for reasons other than money.they could have at least let her go, not forced her onward pregnant, confined and in pain.there is only so much drugs can do for pain, they dont work miracles
