I have been purchasing all kinds of fly repellent like it has been going out of fashion!!!
Please can anyone give me tips on what to use? My horse lives out and wont wear a fly sheet as he loves to rip it off on the fence post at any given opportunity! my mum was in india and brought back odomus cream(with deet). She was in the jungle and said it worked a treat...but i dont know how effective against the dreaded cleg/horsefly?

Thanks
Elizabeth

DEVONSHIRE! well i try to make him wear a full fly outfit with hood and belly panel but he just goes to his favourite fence post and tears the blinkin thing off! I am not buying anymore!! Big git lol. I swear he thinks its funny. He thinks he is conditioning me? Ah hah reverse phsycology? Na he has me wrapped round his hoof! : )

Oh they are vile this year!! Ive been spraying my two to within an inch of their lives but it seems to be making little difference, i cant rug them as they undress eachother. Best way is to turn out at night and keep them in during the day!

My cob isn't too bothered, the TB is suicidal, you could rug and then tape off the field so no scratching posts? I have to tape off my field because my cob baby has the biggest bum ever and if he rubs on posts, they fall down!! lol

DEVONSHIRE funny you should say that....im going to buy elecrtic fencing as my guy has pashed the farmers fence over to get at the long grass...I was horrified when I saw what he had done...Farmer would like green elec fencing not white lol as it looks nicer.

Bath him in a tea tree or lavender shampoo that will calm the itch a bit and help repel flies, then put a rambo sweet itch hoody on him - they are in a league of their own - they are thicker than usual fly rugs, so stronger, and made of cotton so cool. Mine destroy all fly rugs in no time, but sweet itch hoodies have lasted at least two summers, usually three, so worth the extra money (and I never buy expensive rugs usually). You may need two - to be able to swop them over and dry them in wet weather, although they do do a waterproof liner, but I've never tried one. Unless they are really suffering in the eye area I wouldn't bother with an eye mask as they seem to rub them off most!

Best thing is Neem Oil, keeps the blighters away.

Mix 5ml Neem with 5 ml soap and mix up with 1 L if hot water and sponge that all over the horses. You see the horse flies zoom in, stop mid flight and go away.

The best thing to stop the itch if you get bitten is NAF fly gel. Takes the sting away and it stays away.

Neem also alleviates itching

Well I hope SSS hasn't changed. I've also just bought a shed load. Barmy move by avon if it is no longer effective, horse owners must keep the profits up by a huge amount.

Stupid question from me, yes I know that is unusual :D, how does stabling in te day help? Do they not just fly in any way?

Don't know why, but they don't. This afternoon I turned my two out without rugs or muzzles in the little turnout paddock so they could have a roll and a groom. Ten minutes later they were charging up and down like mad things (unusual for them). When I went to look, they were covered in horse flies, loads of them. I led them back to the yard, still covered, but once inside their stables they all went away. They must find it too dark to see or something?

I've got a Ride-On fly rug which is basically in two halves, you just clip it together and attach to the saddle D-rings and hey presto. Horse looks like a jousting horse, but hey who cares, and it just gives that extra layer of protection for flies and midges.

Haven't tried it for horse flies yet tho' - was plagued by them this afternoon. Tomorrow am gonna try Pig Oil with a few drops of Neem and sponge over the coat. See how they like that!

Tried the naf citronella tags on the d rings today - worked a treat. V strong, the riders behind me could smell it!;)

I just bought 20 quid worth of avon sss too so I hope it's ok, but I'll add some citronells oil to it just in case;)

Agree the sss by Avon not effective now:mad:
Hope they change it back, unless its just bad luck and it doesnt work on mine.
Nowt seems effective here against the horse flies either. All the wet conditions has brought them out in force now the round yellow thing has appeared. Hopefully, they will stop in next week or two.

Anyone tried any of the feed supplements. Marmite is also meant to work (feeding it not putting it on the horse!)

LOL - love it canteron!

My welsh a is going nuts with the flies so he comes in during the day. My ID couldn't really care less. However, today she did wear her fly rug and hood for the first time as well as excessive spraying with repellent.

I have just wikki'd horse fly - they breed in water! Hardly surprising there are loads around this year. Also, it is only the females that bite like mozzies. Seems like the only thing they do right is eating slugs and snails when they are young.

Leave anything that dosent have premitherin in it on the shelf!! deet, tea tree etc waste of time and money!!!! try coopers or Farnam tri tec,

.... and why is it that the blighters always bite you at the top of the leg on the back by your bum crease, leaving an egg sized red itchy lump - grrrrrr!

I just bought some citrnella oil to add to the SSS, hopefully that'll put the effectiveness back in - trouble is, it's now become as expensive as normal horse fly spray, unless anyone's got any ideas to make it go further?:)
