OMG HORSE FLIES!!!!!!

Best thing is Neem Oil, keeps the blighters away.

Mix 5ml Neem with 5 ml soap and mix up with 1 L if hot water and sponge that all over the horses. You see the horse flies zoom in, stop mid flight and go away.

The best thing to stop the itch if you get bitten is NAF fly gel. Takes the sting away and it stays away.

Neem also alleviates itching

What type of soap?

Don't bother with those Naf citronella fly tag things, meant to last 4-6 weeks apparently...4-6 hours more like it!
I'm using Naf Deet ATM...think I'll try Coopers when this runs out!

I make my own repellent and cover them in it! Seems to work! Although the only thing that keeps the horse flies off is their fly rugs. Hey are extremely lightweight and thin fly rugs so they don't get at all hot in them in this heat during the day.

IRISHBABYGIRL Thanks for the heads up but the ones im meaning are the actual cattle tags farmers use? or are they the same?

Just bought cattle ear tags for £2.85 and they last 5 months. These have premitherin in them, are clear and flexible and will see how they go plaited into mane.:)

Where did you get your flectron tags from. I can only find them in boxes of 45 and you have to fill out forms as to what you are using them for as they are only licensed for cattle. I used them a couple of years ago but a friend gave me a couple so never had to buy any.

There's an old thread on here under "Flectron fly tags" or something similar. Worth a look.

HHOer Alec Swan is an expert so worth mebbe contacting him??

Apparently he says plaiting them in manes is useless, you have to actually make sure they touch the horse's skin, he recommends one each side attached to a headcollar on the INSIDE.

No good apparently just letting them dangle from bridles/headcollars or plaiting into manes/tails. Its the contact with the skin that's important. Presumably you could also put them inside a fly rug to do the same thing.

Magic!

I will endeavour to find him.

Another vote for power phaser. I went out this morning and they were covered in flies (not horse flies, just the black ones but loads of them) Sprayed them and not a single fly.

Had to repeat this evening though, oldie hollered as soon as she saw me to let me know it needed topping up :D

So far (keeping fingers utterly x'd) haven't seen any horse flies or bots...

They are driving me mad too. Put my boys fly rug on and doused him in fly spray. One of the lil buggers bit me and they dont half pinch!

His field buddy gets hounded by them constantly, feel sorry for her as her owner doesn't rug her and she hates sprays :(

I'm slightly surprised on my yard as out of 15 horses mines the only one wearing a fly rug?! And they are out in force!

Another power phaser fan.....all our local tack shops sell it, not difficult to source,I find. Think I pay £14 a bottle. I apply it out side though, as its rather potent!!!!!

just done this exercise myself and have been told by many to by Coopers Fly Repellant plus Expensive. Got some today and applied - ill keep you posted. Cant use fly sheets as they come in soaked anyway a rug would kill them!

It's worth it.

£99 a litre and you only need to use maximum 10ml every 4 weeks. That is a LOT of applications. I have been using it for two years now, no complaints. I started a thread on it last year.

flytags were found in my local farm supplies shop.

They say nothing about direct contact with skin on the animal, but say to do the entire herd, so I have bought two - one each for both mine who share a field

Will look at the flectron thread - thanks

For one horse, a long time - theres over 100 applications in a litre bottle if you apply 10ml.

Depending on how many months you need to use it, e.g. 6 months thats 6 applications.... only 94 to go :)

I buy lots because we have many horses so kept refridgerated will last a long time.

Ask your vet for 100ml. Thats how I started for one horse. Lasted me until June this year.

I use NAF Deet when I hack, I find it quite good, but it doesn't last long enough for the field. My horse has a lump the size of a golf ball on his forehead, despite a fly hat. He wears a fly rug otherwise he looks like he has been paint balling. His body is covered in lumps.

Awe thats a shame. I feel so bad for the big guys. My big guy has been frightening the farmers wife by galloping up to the fence(he is an ex racer). The flies/horse flies/ufos have been driving him mental. PAINTBALLING?lol : )

Have now looked. Flectron works differently to Auriplak, which is what I have bought. They have different active ingredients, so Alec's advice for Flectron may be specific to that chemical compound. Auriplak differs from Flectron in that it has an active ingredient in it called permethrin. This works by acting as a neurotransmitter to the insect that walks directly across it, thereby affecting the insects nervous system. It does not appear to be a thing that is absorbed into the skin and excreted all over by the horse like flectron's compound. At least, this is my understanding. If I am incorrect, I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell me:)
