I've just filled in and printed off an entry form for trailblazers in 3 weeks time....!

I've not even sent it yet and I feel sick! I really want to get out competing this summer, but it's years since I've competed and I'm really having to force myself lol!

Does anyone have any tips on going to a show on your own? Or any tips on bribing people to help you would be good, too

I've just been out for the first time in over a year. I was terrified beforehand but we had a great time - I'm sure so will you.
Is there no-one you can trade favours with so you help them another time or maybe you could find out if anyone you know might be going too?

All i can say is make sure you are well prepared. By that I mean do everyting the day before so in the morning you can just get up and go. I find this sooooo much easier and less stressful if she is clean and plaited up, everything in the car ready to go the day before. It also gives me a chanc to forget something

i find i'm better when i go on my own than with someone - but each to their own.

I know my lad inside out, and he's so calm and easy to do that i don't really need anyone except to put up the practice jumps, or wipe my boots before the dressage - and i can usually find some willing individual to help for a few minutes while their mounted part is also warming up! i find that if i go with someone i end up more stressed as they don't do things the way i want them done, or in the right order or whatever.

I have my own little routine, which is to park up on arrival, open the top of the front ramp so he can see out. then go get my number and check on times etc. when i go back to the box i'll have a cup of tea if there's time, then get him out, brushed over, bandages off and tail undone from its plait.

then hoof oil inside and out all feet. boots on (except for dressage!). then tack up him, then change and get ready for me.

check girth, pick up stick (not for dressage), lock landrover, re-oil feet again. wipe over him andtack with a cloth, put boot cloth in pocket and mount. once on tighten girth, wipe over boots and throw cloth into trailer.

warm up, compete, back to trailer, dismount and loosen girth between phases or untack if very hot or all finished.

after cross country i wash him off, squeegee him and put a fleece on. then ice tight all four legs and bandage over greaseproof paper. load up

then hand in number, collect results and travel home.

it works for me, but as i said i know my lad is calm and totally un-bothered by life!
