OMG I'm so relieved! Laminitis woes

I have not posted lately about my mare's condition, as to be frank, I thought we had come to the end of the road and I really expected to be having to have her PTS. I didn't want to start a thread about it on here as having to say goodbye to her would hurt me more than it has ever hurt me before. Basically, she came down with lami again but this time was not responding. Not in the slightest after 4 weeks in a small sand enclosure and soaked hay. She was re tested for Cushings and it is within normal limits so the prascend is working, so I was puzzled. Last time she responded within days. Anyway, I have just had xrays done and they show no rotation! I cannot believe it. Vet says that her cushings has compromised the sole thickness of her feet and this, not active laminitis is causing the pain. So, the way to go is imprint shoes and I should see an instant improvement. Hope I'm not speaking too soon, but I am just sooo happy!

I'm almost certain Imprint shoes and my fantastic farrier saved my girl when she went down with lami in one foot, such a relief!

She's definietly on the road to recovery now, we've had to remove all shoes as she kept pulling them off and we're attempting to get her comfortable unshod at the moment, all 3 of her other feet are perefect! (we had imprints for about 5 months, then heart bars, and then normal shoes) - she is fine in her stable, and in the field (so long as the ground isnt too hard), I've just discovered these www.hoofwraps.com - to get her from her stable to field and back again, as she is still struggling over concrete/hard uneaven surfaces... maybe something you can consider down the line?

It is the same for my girl. The pain is mainly in one foot, the others seem fine. I hope your girl continues to make progress. It's so horrible seeing them in pain.

There is new research on chronic laminitics looking at predisposition to recurrent abscesses due to bacteria proliferating in the loosened laminae Think this is what got my lass. Losing battle IMO.

I do think it may get her in the end. She's retired, and so every year is a bonus. I already know that the Cushings in itself will have shortened her life. So sorry to hear about your girl. It is a devastating and cruel disease. I have already decided that I will not box rest her for a prolonged period as I believe that if it doesn't get better in a short time, then it will always be a losing battle. Problem is, it is often those horses that we love the most that we try to keep going the longest, and they therefore suffer more. Quality of life is paramount, and should come above our own feelings.
