I can't believe the cost of horse insurance !!

I was getting quotes for new one putting value at £3500 with and without loss of use Cheapest was £621 with LOU and £531 without it.

Still get quote from NFU and SEIB

I wont pay for LOU tbh, a sit increases the premium by SO much. My mare is insured at £2.5k (the lowest I could) for eventing/hunting etc etc (all included under the one category) and it is about £360 a year.... it is SO expensive

That's why Daisy isn't insured. So far we've not had a year where the vets bills have been anything close to what the insurance would be. Does cause my heart to skip a beat though when something's wrong with her but so far we've been okay.

PetPlan has gone up a huge amount too this year. I had to look twice at my renewal to make sure I wasnt paying for someone elses horse as well!

That's less than I am paying lol!

A way to cut it is to not have LOU, and put a low horse value in.

It just means should the horse die in insurance terms you will only get the reduced amount back. So for eg you would get say £ 2000 innstead of £3 500/ It does drop the premiums a lot though.

It won't affect the cover you get re vets etc.

It is an option to cut costs.

I just did that with my mum's horse. Bought him 12 years ago for £3,800, now a field ornament and his insurance was still way up there at £3,800. Tried to drop it and could, apparently, only drop it by half. If anything happened to him they would only pay out the "market value or sum insured whichever the lesser" what a complete rip off, his market value would never be £1,900. Finally managed after pestering and pestering to get them to drop to their minimum of £500.

Don't just accept any huge increases of premiums, is my advice! they try to get away with this all the time. With my cat's insurance, petplan tried to double (DOUBLE) it after the first year (no claims had been made) but when i called them and threatened moving somewhere else because i could get the same cover at the original rate, they instantly switched me back to the original one.

I have all mine insured by petplan , to be honest i have only insured all three for token prices. For me piece of mind for vet bills and public liability are essential .

I renewed with Horse and Rider insurance who are underwritten by insurance direct it was still about £320 a year for 2k cover (no lou) with top vet bill cover and exess was only £75. It was the most reasonable I could find, couldn't find anyone with experience of them though so hoping they are as good if we need them!

I don't know the individual values but I am paying just under £100 per month for two horses insured for £3/3.5k without LOU and my lorry with breakdown cover, so I think about £300 ish each - all with NFU

i was with petplan and that went up to £50 a month without lou for a value of £2500 with no claims ever on that horse. i went with amtrust and that is £43 a month with loss of use plus hospitalisation fees covered that you get with petplan.

We're with Scottish Equestrian too. Insured for horse @ £5k and trailer and comes to about £500 a year - not sure if we have LOU or not

We've always found them helpful and friendly and they paid out on everything, including full cost of MRI, for our last fella.
