Helloooo everyone!
I'm relatively new to the forum but one this that has really struck me hard over the past few weeks is the number of posts that detail accidents to themselves, others, and property caused by their horses (often extremely serious) and although they sem to be insured up to the hilt nobody seems to be getting any compensation?!

I never knew that in order to get a payout that there were so may clauses and red tape to wade through first? I always assumed that if someones horse kicked me and I ended up half dead i would at least get some form of compensation for the fact that my life was ruined forever?
I fully understand that investigation needs to take place as there are some bad apples who try and claim/sue etc at every opportunity telling fibs along the way, but surely thats what I though insurance is for?

I pay out just over £1000 a year for all my horses and liability insurance and now I'm beginning wonder whether its all just a waste of money?

Does anyone out there have any positive stories to tell re compensation / damage to other people / property?

I think most people who spend time around horses accept that accidents happen where horses are concerned. Therefore just one of those things, so wouldn't dream of claiming. Unless a suppose it's caused by negligence. When my horses broke my ankle i could have claimed as i have personnal liabilty on my insurance. To be honest it never occured to me at the time.

I agree, I've had my fair share of 'minor' accidents around horses.
I didn't even claim when my friends horse broke my foot and I had 4.5 weeks off work unpaid because I put it down to 'one of those things' and felt guilty as she a very good friend and didn't want to go through months of insurance claims (bad enough with cars if any of you have had the unfortunate pleasure of making a car claim

My point is that if something really serious happened i.e. brain damage, loss of limbs etc and your life was ruined or someone elses for that matter, surely thats what we have insurance for in the first place and i would want to claim if I could never walk/work/ provide for my family ever again etc

I don't mean to hijack anyone elses post but if you haven't read MyMills post from yesterday then please do - some of the replies are awful (talking about past experiences of accidents in mean)!

I'm under the duvet type scared now!!!!!

Unfortunately horseriding is one of the 7 worlds most dangerous sports, up there with mountain climbing and skiing.

Accidents happen, its just a fact of life and i agree i wouldnt dream of claiming. My friends horse kicked out at another horse on a ride and hit the riders leg breaking it! He claimed against her and she had to sell her horse and struggled to pay it off :/

I have BHS Gold membership so I have the public liability insurance, but I don't have my horses insured for vets, death etc. The BHS cover gives me peace of mind should one of my horses kick a dog, break a gate, run over a cyclist etc!

I fully understand that nobody would want to claim but sometimes that person needs to in order to be able to live.

I really struggled when my friends horse broke my foot and it took us 6mths to recover from it financially. If I had been off work any longer we would have not been able to make the mortgage repayments, care for our family, and would have had to consider selling the horses.

I think everyones situation is individual and they shouldn't be made to feel bad if they do want to make a claim - If my horse seriously hurt someone and it wasn't their fault or caused by their own stupidity then I would hope to god they my insurance would give them what they deserved.

I don't think anyone (I know at least) would abuse this but my point is isn't that what insurance is there for in the first place to insure against accidents etc because you wouldn't normally be able to afford to replace someones car/horse/repay mortgage normally - otherwise what is the point in shelling out for it each month???

Hi Spot_the_risk,

I too have full insurance but apparently a lot of the time the circumstance in which the accident happened determines whether they IC pays out so if your horse does hit a car your not garanteed be covered....Yikes!

Thats very true, i was out on a hack with a group of people and we were waiting at a junction, there was a car behind us and one of the horses backed into it. The horse damaged the bumper. The insurance company refused to pay out telling the car owner he had control over the car, and should have put it in reverse and moved out of the way.

Ditto this.Public Liability insurance covers you for being sued and does not automatically mean they will pay out for damages/injuries incurred by others even if you feel they should
