I always worm my horses regularly and have been worming the 2 foals 6wkly since birth.

I wormed them all for tapes the day before yesterday and this morning mucking out, I found these!!!!! -

I'm absolutely mortified!!!

I have never ever found worms in their droppings before and now I feel like the worst owner in the world.

So what do I do? Do I need to worm again or will they be all out now???

Yuk in deed! Your foals look in LOVELY condition so I'm sure it is not a problem but I must admit I shall get on and worm mine soon on seeing that. Do you know what sort of worm it is? I don't think its tape worm maybe post in Vet to find out I would be interested to know.

Don't feel bad, what more could you have done? Worms are getting very resistant to wormers. I'm not sure if it'll make you feel better or worse, but my friend's foal grew up at a well known stud and all the horses there were religiously wormed according to the vets instructions. She nearly lost the foal at a year old to worm damage.

I would have a word with your vet about changing your worming programme, but I do think all horses have some level of infestation.

trust me, when I wormed my 17month old it looked like there was a global convention for tapeworms happening in her stable, it was gross.

I had been noticing a few coming out in her poo before hand as well.

Dont feel bad, although gross its better out than in! And we all can only do our best.

They are not tape worms, which are flat.

They look like pinworms to me, as you can see their innards and have a tapered end. I've heard that pinworms have been very prevalent this year. Its thought they are becomming resistant. My friends horse had them and ivermectin would not get rid of them. She had to do a 5 day panancur every months for three months to get rid of the buggers (on advice from Liphook vets)!

Agree with this! Wouldn't worry at all :)

Would a horse with pinworms also rub its bum a lot? If so it may be worth just washing down the stable door??

MMmm I am not a worm expert :D I thought they looked more like roundworms? correct me if I am wrong.

I would look into getting a worm count done. The vets can let you know if and what worms they may have and worm accordingly. I think I paid £10 ish for a worm count, would be cheaper for more I think.
:)

Not always, no.

Oh more vomit!!! Thanks for that link Perissa! Mmmmm, not enjoying my lunch now! I wormed with Eqvalan Duo so not a tapeworm only one. Haven't noticed any of them scratching their backsides tho.

Think I'll be getting a worm count done now!!!

LOL at WoopsiiD!!!

This hopefully should be a close up picture of a roundworm

The difference between round worms and pinworms is that pin worms are see through and you can see their innards and round worms are white but no see through. So I don't think they are roundworms from the pictures the OP posted.

don't feel bad!!! this happened when i wormed my mare she was 4 and she had loads in her muck the following morning bearing in mind i had wormed her reguarly since i had owned her which was for 4 years she was always in fab condition

Pretty sure it is a large roundworm or Ascarid (parascaris equorum) which can grow up to 40 cm when mature. I would ask your vet about any further treatment necessary. I breed dogs and haven't seen a worm in puppies for more years than I can remember. I'm sure the pups do have worms but the new wormers kill them and they get digested so you never actually see them. With the old wormers they would be wiggling about in the poo. Big Yuk.

Eew. I spoke to a rep from a wormer company and she said that they are trying to encourage people to do more worm counts and less worming as they are getting so resistant to wormers. Scary thought, what happens when none work?
