Sorry - useless post. But had such a panic half an hour ago! I stupidly left the main gate (we have an outer layer of fencing where the trailer is parked in a yard etc. and then the actual field bit) open as I had driven in with my car with feed. And Id left the smaller gate (down nice concrete steps...) undone, because usually it just swings back but somehow it swung open (wind?) while I was in the feed room and all I heard were hooves, 2 of the horse had launched off the steps and were running for the bloody main gate. They ran out into the road, a car was coming but luckily it was going slowly anyway so managed to stop in time. And thankfully the car with its lights on seemed to spook them back in my direction so I managed to herd them back into the yard.

Bloody hell was it lucky. One of them majorly panics in these situations - so I was so relieved when he followed the other one back in. Pure luck. I could have killed my horses today! Before you say it, yes I will be properly securing all gates from now on.

There but for the grace of God go a lot of us, I expect. I'm glad for you it ended so well. I bet you'll be totally paranoid in future about closing gates lol.

two of mine went for a hooly this evening as well, last week my friend emailed me to say that she had bought her horse in ,she has to walk him down a main road, for the first time ever she decided to tie him up before shutting the inner yard gate.horse spots YO in the field dragging a large sack behind her and decides its the scariest thing ever.he took off got onto the main road galloped round the housing estate opposite the yard then galloped up the main road, eventually came back again with his lead rein wrapped round his legs. how he didnt get killed i dont know as the road is one of the main ones into town and is 3 car widths wide.ment to be a 30 limit but you tell the road users that...
very scary when things like this happen and they happen so fast. our 2 are bay & almost black and were loose on a country lane at 4.30 this evening and the speed people drive down there is horrendous. glad all horses concerned are safe!

A few nightmares over this but a mistake you wont make again.
My boys got past me one night when wind blew gate out of my hands and they were hyper because wind was so strong. Instead of going into nice stables with tea waiting they shot down the road into lorry park. Owner of lorry park chased them back into road GRRRRRRRRR havent spoken to him since and they galloped to next farm after crossing road junction where they stopped to talk to their horses. Farmer trapped them in lane with quad bike til I got there. Both OK not so sure about me nearly had heart attack!!!

OMG what a horrible moment for you. One of those heart stopping moments. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing - it's a pity we can't have it as foresight! It would save so much hassle.

It must be a day for it, some of mine broke out of the field this morning (6.30am) and were standing munching in the garden of a house just down the lane. The guy phoned the YO who had to go down and retrieve them back up again!!!

Cheeky buggers

Sometimes I think things like this happen for a reason to give us a bit of arude awakening!

Glad to hear they were all unharmed, I bet you were white as sheet for ages afterwards!
