As some of you kind enough to read my whinging post the other week will know, i've been having a few problems with cantering the Destroyer recently.
Added to which he fell over his own feet out hacking last friday (during his hot "date" with fit mare) so I decided to get the back lady out to both boys.
She came last night, worked on Omar, pronounced him in the shape of his life and moved on to my lad.
She opened the stable door, took one look at him and said "its obvious why you're struggling cantering him. i'm sorry to tell you this but...".
I swear my heart leapt into my mouth as I suddenly thought of all the things she was about to say next.
Then she started laughing and said "have you not noticed his arse is 4 inches higher than his front end at the moment?"
- Cue me staring at her in even more horror - "karen he's having a growth spurt and a fairly big one by the looks of it".

Other than a bit of bruising to his neck where i probably caught him when we both went for a tumble he's fine, but by the looks of it my "baby" boy is getting even bl**dy bigger!
You know when you see them everyday its amazing what your eye doesn't see anymore. My lovely back lady hasn't seen him for 6 months and said it was so obvious!
He's huge NOW!! What the hell am I going to do when the front end catches up with the back end again?

Do you think taking 4 inches off his back legs will help? Do they make cargo nets to drape over horses so i can climb up him to get on? With my fat little legs I'm going to need springs fitted to get anywhere near him!

Please someone reassure me this will be the last "spurt"?!!

LOL!

Ari is a bit bum high at the moment - maybe that explains the canter issues we're having. I'm worried too - he already seems very tall to me...

I think a portable hole or trench is the the thing - maybe about a foot deep with ramped ends . Throw onto ground, walk horse in via ramp, get on with ease, exit via other ramp!

God don't! I haven't ridden Monty properly in about a year since he had a sharer. She no longer shares him so I am riding him and Zoom myself.

Zoom is 14.3.............Monty is 17hh!!!!! I can't bloody get on him, it's very embarrassing. And I'm 6foot so I don't really have an excuse!

Awwwww poor you! As for Hovis, since height = fitness, (at leat its a possibility in a mare's eyes, good genetics etc) maybe now he'll stand a better chance with fit mare???

Jesus The Destroyer at 17HH is the stuff of nightmares! The ground shakes now when he's at full tilt. As soon as he leaves the yard the local wildlife network issues an all points bulletin for all small creatures to take to their bomb shelters.
The local indoor SJ centre we sometimes go to are talking about reinforcing their floor to cope with him - the sound of his feet hitting the floor after jumps reverbs off all the walls and has been known to make the decorations fall off their xmas tree!
 
I'm picturing that scene in Jurassic Park - the one in the car with the bottle of water vibrating as an approaching Tyranosaurus comes closer!!

Trust me that look tame compared to what happens when the Destoyer goes into "I'm Milton" mode.
There are people who have reported earthquakes in lincolnshire in the last couple of years. I can safely tell you they were in fact the beast that is called Hovis leaping over a couple of hedges.
 
He can join the C&F club - both of mine are bum up again - both are about the same age as Mr H.

Farra is always a big clumsy lump so I don't always notice with her, but with Chancer the minute he goes bum up I notice on his canter - but he soon adjusts to his new bum height. He is about 2" different at the moment.

Thought you might like to know that clydesdale grow until 8 or 9

Fleur my WB at the age of 5/12 was just over 15.3 - at 7 1/2 she was 16.3 and then filled out - whoops.

Finally - nope this is not the last spurt, but it is probably the last really noticeable one, and then he will fill out.

I am praying Farra won't go much more - she was just over 16.2 when we bought her and just under 17 hands last time we measured - her mum was 18.1

I'm so sorry to tell you this but most warmblood and draft breeds don't stop growing fully until they are about 8!!!

if he gets too big I'll have him!

OH suggests (helpfully) that you should build holes around the place so that you can get on easier!
 
well my girl heavey cross grew until about 8yr old and was 3 inches bigger than when we bought her as a 5yr old and is still bum hi at 11 so he might not make 17..........................................and then pigs might fly

She's 16.2hh now at five, and expected to go to 17.1hh.

Hm.

Just imagine what the 'child' of those two would be like

Gotta love big horses huh? Fella is soo big a mounting block is too short for me to get on - I have to use a wall...
Yeah I could have lied, but remember, big is beautiful! I would never get a horse that was less than half shire now, I love 'em. It's big, heavy horses all the way for me.
 
I thought that sounded like my horse - who is Clydesdale cross. MY RI has commented that he could 'feel' me hacking up the road before!

He stopped growing up the way at 6, but then grew out the way for 2 years.
