Saw this the first time round, still as shocking the second time.
Not against eating horsemeat, but this was something completely different, this horse was someone's pet and was never intended for the meat market, it is that which makes this so horrifying. I imagine the owner upset someone and this was some form of revenge, but that is only supposition as I cannot imagine any other reason to attack a horse in it's field and leave the evidence for the poor owner to find, like some sort of warning. If it was purely for meat then they would not have butchered the horse on site surely?
I would bet that they took the legs because they could probably sell them onto vets etc for money.
I would be soooo upset if that had been any horse of mine, but I personally know of someone who lost several horses in one night and found only their heads in the morning.
Very, very upsetting
OMG . that poor horse, and poor owner.
i must have missed this 1st time it was on the forum.
i hope they do the same to the sick b**tards as they did to this poor mare
I find your reply very rude and curt JM07. I personally had not seen the thread before as I dont come here everyday and dont have time to read every thread.....so I did find it interesting.
As far as why do people repeat and repeat etc and find it shocking.....I dont shock easily but I suppose what I do find shocking is that instead of taking the whole horse, they have just taken the bits that they want!! Shocking that human nature can be so thoughtless sometimes.
I dont have a problem with horses being used for meat if they take everything - however, I think to leave a horse that is clearly a loved pet for the owner to find like that is callous and cruel, it would have been better to take the whole body rather than leave it like that for the owner to stumble across.
Thats the nasty part.
This goes on day to day but there is a place and that place is a slaughterhouse, NOT on someones property and without permission to actually take their pet. Its simple theft!
what i do find "shocking" is people continually finding this "shocking"??
it baffles me TBH...

I don't find the horsemeat trade shocking. It happens & is not much different to beef/lamb etc. I don't like the live transportation but I don't disagree with horsemeat either. I wouldn't eat it & I wouldn't send a horse of mine to the meat man but it does happen.
What I do find shocking is the fact that this mare was butchered in her field. Her specifically & the dismembered parts left for her owner to find.
She wasn't stolen, she was butchered 'alive' in her field. While her fieldmates were left alone & were there to sense what was happening.
That's what I find shocking.

Exactly - I worry that this sort of thing will start happening in this country if the price of food continues to rise. I remeber a spate of incidents involving sheep being butchered in Fields in Norfolk about 15 years ago, turne out to be an ex slaughter man doing it and peddling the meat on etsates and pubs.
I think people are shocked because most of us are not used to seeing any animals butchered, let alone a horse. And it is a pretty horrific sight. Also, the fact that this was (allegedly) done to the horse while it was alive in the field is shocking - we can all put ourselves in the owner's shoes.
From what you've posted, JM07, am I right assuming that you think the photo might have been staged for the purposes of shocking people?
To be honest if it was your pet sheep, cow, horse, donkey or dog - you'd be devastated to find someone had killed it and chopped it up (however humanely)
Perhaps the issue here is that someone in this country could do this and if caught, they would probably face nothing more than a fine despite the emotional damage done.

ok, my first reply would become self explanatory if HHO had "sound" (god forbid!!) as i'm reading it back slightly differently obviously, to most..
it is agreed, unpleasant a subject, and no i wouldnt be too keen to find any of mine in this state one morning...
and yes, i do feel "we" go over things time and time again on here, whether thats a good or bad thing, i'm indifferent...
as to the animal being Alive..yes i do doubt that very much..
staged managed...maybe...the website is very Animal Rights dont you think?? BB herself is IMO a complete La-La with some of her extreme views...so who knows...
oh, and the it baffles me was just that....the article "baffles me".......
Yes, it certainly is an odd article. And I think we could all imagine what the scene was like without the grim photos.
This was why I asked if you thought it may be staged - it's all a bit sensationalist. And I know that certain sectors of the animal rights movement are not averse to such stunts.
Whoever did it, for whatever reason, is one sick puppy.
that poor horse and owner.its horrible.i would get mad if i saw any of mine like that or heard of it near me.
if the poor horse has been hacked up whilst alive it is shocking
its shocking someone could look at someone elses animal and just take a shot gun and do that to it.how dare they.
totally disgusting.
I have to be completely honest and say that whilst the pictures were awful, I have seen worse. This was the first time I saw this today and I think the thought of the actual animal and it's owner, their feelings immediately prior (the horse) and after finding her (the owner) are the most upsetting part of this. I have no doubt she was dead before they started the butchering, it says in the report that it had been done by professionals, they wouldn't have risked the horse moving and ruining a cut of meat. I would also imagine that she had been bled before they started too otherwise the meat would be tainted. For me, I just couldnt imagine finding one of mine like that, I dont think I would ever recover and I would imagine that, as long as he owns the other horses, the owner will never be able to relax and will worry constantly. Not a nice thought that someone felt it was ok to so this to an animal at all let alone one belonging to a loving owner.
I think the actual butchery looks quite neat...but am a bit concerned by the hygiene aspects of the butchered meat.
If the horse were alive when they started, it wouldn't be for long...
So why is it ok to eat animals who you don't 'know' personally, but shocking if you do?
S
This will probably sound odd, but I don't find the images that shocking, because I am a vet student and have performed dissection on horses as part of my training. The shocking part is the circumstances. I've no doubt that the horse herself was unaware of the butchery, but I cannot imagine what the poor poor owner is going through. Bad enough to lose your horse in any circumstance, but for that to be your lasting image of your animal is horrific and the person who did this can hardly be cosidered human.

sure JM07 would just shrug if their horse was found like this....err not
[/ QUOTE ]
Err...probably. Some people on here are more detached from horses than others, and whilst JM07 might be a soppy nitwit in real life (who knows?!), her written appearance is one (to me) of someone who thinks everyone should just get on with life, horses die, they're just animals.
If someone cut Ronnie to bits and left his parts for me in his field, I'm afraid I'd never forget it, and just the thought of it now brings tears to my eyes. All, no, most of us can put ourselves in the position of that poor horse's owner. No-one expects their pet to be hacked to bits. I'd be just as horrified if it was a pet cat, hamster or fish.
Yes, the same things get discussed again and again on here, but that's why we're here. We share the same hobby/love of horses and yes, in a community this large, things will happen more than "once in isolation". People rarely manage to get through life without ever repeating themselves. Ooo now there's a challenge.
