I nearly have one.... my konik cross polish tb has the dorsal stripe and cross and zebra stripes on his legs and forehead (not quite as stripey as this little chap )the rest of him is silver dun .A pic would be better I know but I'm just too thick
It's very cute, but to be honest, I can't bear us humans messing around with inter-species breeding. World domination and all that - doesn't do it for me.
Is this for real? They have actually crossed a zebra and a donkey? Why would you do that?! What point is there in introducing the donkey genes to the zebra's or did they just think it would look cute?! utter madness I say
Oh I don't know just thought it was a nice Friday afternoon pic! But it does look as though it may be a wild donk in Africa or something, suppose it does happen as there are a lot roaming around that the locals use. Sorry if I have offended any breeders.
Well a mule serves a purpose and can be ridden, will this 'zeedonk' be rideable or will it just be a fancy zebra that might be more tasty for the lions? Jen1 I'm not offended by you posting the pic
I just think who ever thought to bred it may not have considered why they were breeding and just did it cos they could

Since I neither own a zeedonk nor in fact ever seen one before, I have no idea if you can ride one or not. I also haven't eaten one so can't comment on that either
Personally, I find that the zeedonk is actually very cute and it appears from the photo to be perfectly fit and healthy. It's cetainly a lot less worrying in my view than, for example, the dogs with all the loose skin over their eyes that keep having health issues such as eye infections etc. and the sausage dogs that have the muscular/skeletal problems just because a few humans used selective breeding to make them look 'pretty'!
Super cute foal! Lovely Friday afternoon pic thank you!
Hmmm as regards messing around with species..if 2 species can mate and have offspring then surely that is natural, and may happen more than we realise? Yes the hybrid offspring may be sterile but if it is a viable cross then it will happen in the wild occasionally. If a human has put these 2 species together then that is different, but then I'm not a fan of humans breeding animals on purpose to the extent we do, full stop.

Careful now SS or we will call you a racist
Why cross a donkey with a horse???

Heehee I'm not a rasict I'm just against inter species sex
Why cross a horse and a donkey...well I would think to produce a more powerful horse, donkeys can carry more weight on their back than an avergae horse but tend to be too small to ride. Cross them to get a bigger donkey that is as powerful but can also be ridden...at least that's my take on a mule not sure the mule owners would agree, maybe they just like the big ears
This is the place near me that has breed some. It was done as an intvestigation into zebra genes i think.........they are very well cared for, i've visited!!
Er, just to say, "sausage dogs" weren't bred to be pretty, they were bred for going down holes and killing foxes, badgers and rabbits. And as a breed, yes, the very showy types CAN be prone to back problems but with careful breeding and a busy life with plenty of exercise, they usually get to old age very happy and healthy. They are certainly not the most illness/injury prone breed despite their unconventional looks. Mine is a teckel type from a line of totally fit, healthy and PRA clear dogs and I don't expect him to have any more problems than my mum's border collie.
Sorry - rant and hijack over - just as a dachshund owner you wouldn't believe the comments from people!
Very cute indeed! Ive seen the resulting offspring of a zebra and a shetland pony before. The two were kept in a field together and surprised their owners one morning. I believe theres a zebra x quater horse in america that does barrel racing, and ive heard of zebras being ridden, although they apparently have quite an attitude!
I see nothing wrong with breeding for looks, as long as the animal is still happy and healthy. I would love to have one to event, maybey i can persuade lucinda fredericks to put Little Brit to a zebra!
The zoo had several (accidents I think) and they've had them for a very long time. They were there when I used to take my children, 30 years ago at least. Nice to know at least one is still going strong.
I LOVE IT! I've seen the one at Penshurst Place but its not as stripey as this little chap. When we spotted the one at PP I was with my 5 year old daughter, and at that precise moment it had a very impressive '5th leg' on full show so now she's convinced that all zedonks have 5 legs....I didn't even bother trying to explain it away...
