omg! viewing a horse tomorrow - abroad!!!

So tomorrow i am driving to Holland to view a horse!
on paper/in pictures he looks perfect! am so excited, i really hope he lives up to expectations!

Hes at a dressage training/dealer yard - the woman seems to speak OK english, but i am worried that i will be taken for a mug - last time i imported a horse, i was ripped off the tune of £500 - thats what you get when you trust people!

I have googled and i think i have picked a vet who could do the vetting nearby - if he is suitable i shall call them monday. other than that i have no idea what to offer in terms of deposit or how to 'do business' over there? Also hes 5 but only been backed 6 months - is that a little late?

Just dont want to get taken for a ride again. too much is resting on this. ( hes a half-brother to the grey in my sig )
 
I prefer them backed late like they describe, than backed too young. Nice long time for the limbs and joints to develop and become strong before carrying a rider's weight. In theory it should mean a long and healthy life.
 
:D Most people in Holland speak English. I hope your not sleepy because at the continent we drive at the right side of the road.

I don't think the age of the horse is a problem. If a horse looks not ready at the age of three it's quite common to start a year later. Much better for the durability as well. I'd rather have a horse which was mounted at the age of five for the first time insteat of 2,5 years old.

Which vet is going to do the healthcheck? Maybe I can give you some adresses.

Considering the payment; You need an IBAN number for the bankaccountnr. The seller can find that information at the site of his bank. Cashpayment is also an option. Exchange can be done at any bank/postoffice.

Yes this will be my third time to the netherlands - hopefully i will not crash into anyone ha ha ha!! i would love your tips and advice - the horse is on the border of Utrecht and Nuid-Holland - i have been to that area before :)

Is it Ok to give cash as a deposit? i thought around 200 euro to hold, the horse, and full amount depending on clear xrays/vetting.

I have googled all the vets in the area, i will PM you the name of the vets i was planning on using - tho i was just plucking out of thin air, no idea if theyre good or not!!

If he passes, i can do a international transfer? any idea how long they take to go through?

Cashdeposit normaly is about 10% of the price agreed to. Also make sure you have in a contract that if the horse should not pass the x-rays/test all cost will be for the seller. If the horse is 100% okay costs are for the buyer.

International cashtransfers take at least a week, sometimes 2 weeks. To transport to England there are several truck going across at a daily basis. Costs would be around 500 euro.
 
thank you anne - this is great to know - it is different here - regardless if the horse passes the vet or not, all costs are with the buyer. Would you be able to PM me a contract in dutch for whatever is normally used?

I have the name of a transport company i used before - i will use them again, as they did all the paperwork.

I want to get this horse over sooner rather than later, but the bank wont let me get the full amount out until weds ( they need 48 hours notice :( ) i didnt know the transfer took 2 weeks, i would want him here sooner if he is suitable - do you know of any way i can get it to them quicker?

We deal with a German company with my business and we do iban transfers that take 2 business days, costs us about £20 I think. We are with RBS.

A lot of businesses have "paypal" fascilities these days, perhaps ask them if they do? Otherwise, depending on the limit on your creditcard, you can use that and pay your creditcard back from your normal bank account. As I said, this is assuming the people you are dealing with are a business and therefore have these options available?
We have done international transfers in the past, you'll be lucky to only take 2 weeks for it to clear, most of ours have taken 3 or more....
 
@tricksy- thanks. just checked with our banks website and coz its euros it said it would only take one working day? i really hope so!

@jokadoka - for the money im paying i would be very scared of what paypal would charge me :o !! i am going to clarify with the bank tomorrow or perhaps look at moneygram/western union. If they have card facilities that would be the easiest as i have visa debit!
