Would I be completely wasting someones time if I phoned up an ad stating this, I am 18 riding 19. Have own transport etc. Or should I not bother?

ETA- ad is for a 16.2hh warmblood on loan 3 days a week

I'd probably lie about my age if it's a cash in hand job

I wouldn't bother, to be honest.

If the Ad says no teens, it is usually because the person wants someone older - maybe they have had a bad experience with a teen in the past.

I share my lad and I don't take teens on - adults only.

I phone, not mention age to start unless they ask. See how it seems on the phone and go from there, it only takes a minute

They are probably aiming it at the younger teenagers that sometimes aren't reliable (not all but the minority give the majority a bad name etc)

Good luck

I just dont understand it to be honest, I ride a 17.1hh not exactly your average teenage ride. I have a job and would be paying for loan myself. Why does 2 years make such a difference!

Sorry if it sounds like a rant just seemed like such a great horse and I really don't want to lie, things always come out in the end

kind of a long story, basically not allowed to compete pickle. So want to take something on half loan to try and gain a bit of experience

would think its more about how mature you are as apposed to an age thing! some of the teenagers I know make me cringe & others are lovely young people! Id call you have noting to lose?

I think you should phone up, tbh if they say no they say no!!

left a message, hopefully they will phone back, I want to be completely upfront and honest. Don't want to completely waste someones time.

I placed an ad stating no teens for my boy. This was due to the fact that there were several on the yard who just goofed about and galloped everywhere.
A 17 year old lad phoned up, we started talking he told me he was 17 but had own car etc. I gave him a chance. BEST THING EVER!!
He was so committed to CB, he was up at crack of dawn, last to leave. Nothing was too much for him. He gave CB a new lease of live. I had stopped XC due to one injury too many!! They were a great partnership.
Give it a whirl. They can only say no..

I would phone them up, say that you realise the ad states no teenagers, but please would they be kind enough to let you come along and meet them. Say you have your own horse that you care for, say how much experience you have, that you are in employment have your own transport and the support of your family. You never know until you ask!
(hope the wonderful Pickle is well BTW

Well done. Just explain that you are mature, reliable etc etc and that you are aware that you are a teenager but maybe suggest a couple weeks trial to prove tp them you are mature enough to take on the responsibilty. Good luck!!

I would tell them when you ring. Whats the point in trying to loan a horse and not tell them how old you are??

If i was loaning out my horse i would be wanting to trust the person - sounds like its not just a short term loan either.

Don't lie its a bad idea - they will be trusting you with their horse.

YAY they e-mailed me! said my age isn't a problem they were just trying to put off 13/14 year olds! seems promising!

Yay! I also put no teenagers - but I really mean under 16 as pony is at a v. quiet yard, and I am not trustworthy - but 18 would be fine-- people seem to grow up in that 2 year period!

well they said I can go trial it after my exams, don't want to do anything until my A-levels have finished to be honest!

But OMG things like this piss me off SO much. Why the hell do people have such a thing against teenagers?????? I'm glad all people aren't like this otherwise when it comes for me to look for a new horse I am going to have a big problem. We don't all go galloping round roads and jump every availiable rock/fence/piece of barbed wire/signpost! I'm actually quite sensible with my horse, I don't gallop her everywhere, I actually care about her legs!! I wish people would open their eyes and see that we aren't all twats.

Coffee_Bean - harsh words - but think about it from the owner's point of you - I had tons of 14 year old girls (normally in pairs) wanting to share the pony...she was on a yard with no other children, normally no one else there. Also...lots of yards have rules that people under 16/17 have to be accompanied by an adult - its to do with the insurance.

I was a very well behaved (most of the time) young teen, but I was on a dealer's yard, and pretty much under supervision until they knew that I was fine. (Did jump the odd style though :P)

So, in response, you aren't all 'twats' but people pay a lot of money on their horses, which they work hard for, and it is generally safer to go for an adult!

to be fair this owner has a 16.2hh warmblood who can be bolshy on the ground, not many 14 YO are going to be suitable!

I'm guilty of this!

I advertised my horse for part loan and said 'over 18s only'
because teenagers do have a bad reputation (not warrented though).

In the end, the best person I saw for my horse was 17. She rode him for year until she went to uni and she was perfect for him. I did ask her for references though.

So give them a ring, worst they can say is no.

<font color="purple"> So?? I was on a yard with one other person, always down there on my own when I was 13....

<font color="purple">So why not give people the benefit of the doubt, let them view and go from there?

<font color="purple">Maybe I'm being thick?? (not being sarcy I generally don't understand the comment....) But are you saying that teenagers don't pay a lot of money for their horses? I'm 14 and payed all my money that I had saved my entire life to have my horse, so I bought her and she is in my name. I have to buy all her tack and rugs, and do a paper round (ie slave labour
wink.gif
) to pay for them
And at the end of the day you never know where your horse will end up, because it is quite likely that the person you sell your horse too may just sell her on in 2 years to a teenager.
