On full livery and suddenly told my horse has to drink from automatic water feeder not bucket

Thanks Tristar, Planete etc..
Didn’t want to mention where I’m currently at to the two yards visited to view. Though one guessed and the other place laughed and said yep they’re a money grabber, don’t care, throw their weight around, and renowned. So I’m glad it wasn’t a one off personal experience. Am new to the area so I didn’t know reputations of places.
Will have a word with the YO this weekend. Have txt as wanted a paper trail but got no response. So will call and perhaps ask for an email address. As txts can sometimes go a miss. Maybe that’s best than a verbal conversation any more

Gosh you have an antagonistic comment for everything. Perhaps ask before assuming things and jumping on the attack.
My father Has a law firm. Hence a lawyer - Friday eve. And in the past has had his own livery yard in years gone past.

Just rise above and ignore the antagonistic comments, the tone of the comments match the user name. Your horse regardless of where it is kept or by whom has a right to clean water at all times and if your yard cannot provide that and understand special needs in relation to the basic needs of an animal they are not doing their job properly.

One day the Government will finally legislate and livery yards will need a licence, at least then an owner will have some recourse to guidance and help.

I can't believe some of the answers the OP is receiving, so would like to make a few points;
1. £600 a month is a not inconsiderable amount of money - as much as many people's mortgages/rent.
2. If livery yards aren't making a profit they are happy with, that's on them. Sensible business people calculate their costs and charge accordingly.
3. In the OP's case the YO was fully aware, and in agreement with her horse's need for a water bucket rather than an automatic drinker.
4, Research has shown that horses drink less in total from drinkers than buckets (I can't be bothered to find the reference though).

Horses are a hobby and a source of pleasure, which people pay a considerable proportion of their income for.
But full livery offered in this country (I live in England) often treat the horses badly - they stand in for hours without food, on dirty wet bedding, the YO buys in poor quality hay then whines when the horses leave the weeds/thistles, they complain about water used, etc.
Most small business owners work their arses off to achieve success - but YOs seem to be harking back to the era of landed gentry and think they should be able to lie in bed all day, and have their multiple own horses and their life style supported by livery customers, who they treat like mediaeval serfs. :D
And that this is to some extent supported by the government in the BPS scheme.

There, I feel better for that rant. :p

That was interesting. But tell me, what is the BPS scheme?

Really poor management. If the YO decided it was too much work for staff to accommodate the water bucket request after they had taken you on as customer they should have told you openly and given you a months notice that they would stop doing it.

Something along the lines of. We have tried giving your horses his water in a bucket but it is has turned out this is too much extra work for this staff. This means from date x we will no longer be able to provide this service.

YO have the right to change what services they offer but they do need to give people adequate notice in order for people to make decisions on if they want to stay.

I have seen a lot of vacancies at part/full livery yards advertised on facebook recently. I expect it is a buyers market due to the coronavirus pandemic. People possibly rethinking about the way they keep their horses depending on what access & how they were treated during full lockdown.

i personally would want more than a bucket of water, i would want a container with at least two buckets in it, minimum, and fixed to something if the horse knocks things over

My cob has to have 2 x50 gallon trugs in her stable because she is messy and has been known to poo in her water, or play with the trug nd knock it over. Fortunately our horses live at home.
