Has anyone ever had a horse or pony with a long term sore throat?

My mare arrived poorly (have posted before) and she didn’t eat hay from the start. She would get choke if she nibbled on haylage and she had an endoscopy which showed throat inflammation and thick pus in her windpipe. She had ulcers on her epiglottis and pus on her vocal chords.

She was treated for pharyngitis using two types of antibiotics. She also had a nasal discharge which contained blood. (Tests for strangles were negative)

This all seemed to clear up but she has never stopped throwing her head up as she eats .... appears to be as a result of pain from swallowing.

This all happened two months ago and now we are seeing her symptoms worsen again. She has a sludgy coloured watery discharge from her nose.

Vet is coming tomorrow but wondered whether anyone else has ever had similar symptoms.

Poor thing. Could there be a foreign body in her throat, I have heard of that. Sinus problems, teeth?
The endoscopy didn’t show anything up. The vet said it was a chronic pharyngitis.

It wasn’t helped by the fact the pus taken to culture couldn’t be used due to it being delayed in the post.

It’s been a long hard struggle as she also has had gastric ulcers and we had an emergency for colic.

We are still fighting as she has gained a lot of weight, is eating much better and is showing her personality.

She is our first pony and was bought for my daughter. We have been very unlucky but then some might say she has been very lucky!
