Had a chat with Jan yesterday afternoon and she asked me to let you know that she is actively investigating installing an on-line entry system fro the Futurity. However, rather than go through the BEF web site (which is really more of an information site anyway) it is likely to be hosted by NED, which once up and running will be an on-line system in the true sense of the word. Going through NED will also mean that pedigree data on NED for horses that have already had their breeding information uploaded by the studbook concerned will be populated automatically and can then be delivered in whatever physiical format we require. Futurity results are already uploaded manually to NED anyway so this system will also make the uploading of scores etc much more time and cost effective.
However, there are a couple of caveats to all of this that I think that you need to bear in mind:
1 The writing of the program will have to be done by NED and depends upon the timescale they are able to draw up. NED on-line will probably have a limited publc launch in the spring so we are probably talking about May
2 It will need to have iterations on the beta version and we may well ask some of you to provide real data entries for this to see if it works (no point in making it up when there are real examples out there
)
3 NED has its own payment system so cannot take automated payments for another organisation as yet (although obvously a link could be put in in due course). On-line entrants will therefore probably be given a code and required to send a cheque in by post, quoting that code and the names/sections of the horses entered
4 Becuase we plan to have 2 Futuritys a week during the assessment period (end July to end of August) it will be very difficult to process very late entries using this system and we will have to say 5 working days as a closing date for on-line entries with later ones added manually.
5 Becuase on-line entries will be taken from what the owners etc put in then any typing errors in names, studbook attributions etc will not be detected -- but can at least be laid at the original inputer's door -- although the final scores list issued at the end of the series will have all of these things corrected
6 Finally, and probably most importantly, only pedigrees that have been submitted already by stud book PIOs providing voluntary data to NED will be populated automatically and then only with ease if the correct UELNs or studbook PIN codes are cited correctly. Foals with parents whose data have been uploaded will be able to have pedigrees autiomatically supplied as well but all others will have to be entered manually in full.
So if you want to enter you animal on-line, with the minium of keyboarding / transcriptin errors please ensure that:
1 the studbook you have used (or are planning to use) to register or overstamp your horse or pony with has agreed to upload voluntary pedigree data to NED. If the stud book involved is any of the following AES, BHHS, BSPA, BWBS, CBS, CHAPS, IDHSGB, SPSS, TBF, Weatherbys (TB and NTR) plus most native breeds and their part-bred registers then everything should be OK, but if it is not one of these (and there are a couple of very siginificant ommissions!) then get on to the studbook concerned and say how important it is that they provide this information to NED. This system -- and NED itself -- can only be really successful with the active support from people like you in the industry and this is one of the ways that you can do this.
2 If the studbook you have used is one based abroad without a daughter societyin the UK and you don't want to have to go to the expesne of having you passport overstamped by one of the above then get that studbook to allow you to form a daughter society based in the UK, which will then become a studbook PIO that can then uploadf that data for you -- in return the mother studbook abroad will almost certainly get reciprocal access to the evaluation and affiliated performance records of ALL stock with their papers currently in the UK, which is invaluable, especially when young stallions need to have progeny and performance testing etc.
HTH. It may not be all that all of you want but we are trying.
