so I never get the opportunity to ride and chat. I used to on my old pony as he was sensible and the likelyhood of him spooking and me dropping my phone was low!
In the car I don't now it's banned but mainly as I don't want the fine, I used to and never found it anymore distracting than taling to someone who was sitting right next to me!
Yars ago when doing my 'old' job I got 'caught' several times out hunting by journalists wanting 'a quick interview' (having the mobile on 24/7 was part of the job description!)
It was fine if we were checked - but I started a radio interview for BBC H&W and 2 minutes in, hounds found and WENT! Now that was ok, but we had to cross a rather deep river! I clutched reins with one hand, 'phone with the other and kept talking - thinking 'any minute I'm going to drop the damn thing and the listeners will just hear glug, glug, glug!' Apparently it sounded ok - someone said afterwards: "It sounded like you were out hunting!" Duh!
I put the phone on vibrate when I'm riding and will answer in the school, but otherwise not (I might if A were a bit quieter though). When I was in the UK I used to hack with my earphone in so I didn't have to take my hands of the reins.
Blimey JanetGeorge that is the height of cool - nonchalantly chatting on phone whilst hunting...wish I could do that!
I never answer mine any more, horse is funny about me mucking about with pockets and stuff anyway. Bizarrely, years ago when I first had him and he was much more nervy, I would chat on phone, text, and also smoke (not all at same time). I never would now. I am on Vodafone and it really annoys me that if someone rings and leaves a message, voicemail constantly calls and texts me. Makes horse very on edge that mother is making so much noise.
I'm always on the phone as it works as soon as i get off the yard, but not on it! I usually dont hold on to it tho and tell the person when we start the call that i am riding and will put it down if the horse prats about!! I can carry on schooling with it tho so horses used to it, my boss used to b able to carry on jumping with two hands, and be on the phone tucked between his ear and shoulder!!
i have texted and been on the phone whilst riding on and off the road, i dont make a habit of it but if neccesary i will, i can trust my horse enough to do it, if i have an accident it's my fault, at least my phone will be handy
