Would it be wrong to clip out my Shetland companion pony just because he looks far too hairy? He held on to his winter coat for ages last year and right now looks scraggy as it's come out in a few clumps where him and Talis play rough in the field.

I have foal rugs that fit him, but he must be hot on days like today when the sun is bleating down.
 
Nope, I don't think so. Start small (neck/belly or low trace) and gradually work up to a full clip as he gets used to it/it gets warmer.

They're such little fluffballs!

I wouldn't my self. They have there coats for resons. You wouldn't catch me naked.... this time of year... Even when its sunny like today. If he's hot surely it will trigger his molting.
 
Course it is not wrong - you can do whatever you like! I would do a low trace to begin with then you can take that back if necessary - I presume you are not doing any showing this year BTW?
 
I have clipped my 25 yr old retired ID (now I can see that he has kept his weight quite well over the winter and I don't have 15 tonnes of fur to remove). I will be clipping my mare tomorrow - also so I don't spend a month covered in hair - and she will be shown from the beginning of May (she is grey though so the difference between clipped and unclipped hair is less noticeable). I would say if it suits you (and you can keep him warm if the weather is grotty) then go for it.
 
You mean showing with the Shetland? PMSL!

Sorry to all shetland fans He's a companion only and thankfully knows his job. Bless him.
 
I would. You can always put a rug on him and if it doesn't grow in properly in the summer just buy him a little lightweight turnout to keep the chill off him.

I really don't think that people bother anymore as to when you can clip.
 
yep! Do it, he'll thank you for it. Our lad was boiling today. And he's losing his coat. He was meant to be clipped last weekend but it didnt happen for various reasons, so fingers crossed this weekend.
Bearing in mind how hard it can be to find a decent rug for a shettie, we have the rhino pony wug lite and it fits him really well. It hasnt rubbed him at all and if he does get sweaty it seems to wick away the moisture and dry him quickly. I'd thoroughly recommend one. He only wears it on wet or really cold days, but it's a Godsend.
 
If it makes him more comfortable then definetly! If your not planning to show him this season then not a problem, I'de personly try a very low trace or bib clip.

I'm sure he'll be a very grateful little pony!
