why can't I buy a decent quality brand from the supermarket with my grocery shop.

My fault, I ran out of dog food the other night and had to do a Mr S shop thinking I'll pick up some dog biscuits.

Bakers, Wagg, was all they had so I had to drive 6 miles in totally the other direction to P at H and pick up my JWB there.

Is there a reason why supermarkets don't stock premium brands.
 
If I get caught out I just buy tins of tuna/pilchards etc to tide me over utnil I can get their 'normal' food (which comes from the butchers)

Its because supermarkets are designed to sell the brands with the best advertising etc quality, nutritional value etc don't matter - exactly the same as the 'human' food they sell:o
 
If I'm stuck I also buy tinned fish/cheap frozen fish/short dated meat etc. I'd much rather do that for a few days that feed the stuff they sell in supermarkets.

It'll all come down to what is the most popular and, depressingly, stuff like Bakers and Pedigree are still massively popular because they've got such a colossal advertising campaign those are the foods people gravitate towards.

I do see what you mean though about massively popular but we on this forum don't in the main feed rubbish so are we a minority on this forum who do care what they feed their animals. I am sure some of those people buying Bakers etc only do so for convenience cos they won't drive someone else to get decent food ( and I can understand not everyone has the inclination to drive to buy dog food separately. I wouldn't want to if I had screaming todlers in tow ).
 
Yea its blinking inconvient for most of the population of dog owners Im sure. Maybe we should start a campaign, I'm sure people would be more inclined to feed better if it was more readily available! We are a nation of convienence shoppers.
I'm in awe of a local village shop/post office round here, most of these type places stock a bit of pedigree chum and some boxes of bakers for when the villagers get caught short of food and I'm sure some of the older population do their entire weekly shop in little village shops still....they dont sell bakers the only dog food they stock is JWB! Never seen another small shop stock it, or one that doesnt stock bakers tbh. Fair play to them. It is a good little shop!
 
they look on the shelves they see offers on the usual brands they go for the offers or the cheapest, thinking dog food is dog food. Not wanting to buy a more expensive dog food. plus supermarkets have limited shelving space so they sell what they know will sell quickly to the masses.
 
Someone on another forum I'm on recently asked about one particular brand that Tesco stock. It's only available in 2kg bags but at the "Price Drop" price it was a little bit cheaper than buying 15kg bags of JWB, and very similar ingredients. With the Clubcard exchange on the go it could work out a fair bit cheaper too. The brand is Lathams and the ingredients are as below

Composition,Rice (26%) , Lamb Meat Meal (26%) ,Peas ,Potato ,Chicken Fat , Linseed (2.5%) , Sugar Beet Pulp (2.5%) ,Digest , Seaweed (1.25%) ,Carrot ,Tomato , Alfalfa (0.5%) , Chicory (0.1%) , Yucca Schidigera Extract (0.1%) ,Calcium Carbonate ,Glucosamine ,Chondroitin. ,Additives ,Nutritional Additives/Kg ,Vitamin A 17 ,000IU ,Vitamin D3 1 ,500IU ,Vitamin E 145mg ,Calcium Iodate Anhydrous 4mg ,Sodium Selenite 2mg ,Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate 32mg ,Ferrous Sulphate Monohydrate 200mg ,Manganese Oxide 81mg ,Zinc Oxide 135mg. ,Technological Additives ,Antioxidant ,Tocopherol Extracts of Natural Origin 375mg/Kg.


Compared to JWB lamb & rice..

Not too bad, I might feed it in an emergency, but like others, I'd probably go down the tinned fish/frozen or reduced meat etc. first.
 
I was thinking this the other day - our local one does stock Vets Kitchen which whilst not brilliant is better than Bakers et al in an emergency. Thankfully both our local Sainsbos are all but next door to PaH so I can at least bounce in there for a pack of Wainwrights.

Waitrose also do Arden Grange but only in small bags.
 
You need to shop in Waitrose they have several big name brands in my local.

What supermarkets stock is determined by what they perceive people in that location will buy. They use their loyalty cards to track the sort of products people are buying, hence you won't necessarily find the same products in every sainsbury, or Tesco etc.
 
Yep Waitrose stock Arden Grange (which is what I feed). I normally buy mine from Vet UK over the internet because I get so frustrated about the lack of quality food available in the supermarkets - or paying exorbitant prices for it!!

We are lucky in that we have a kennels just down the road and whilst they stock the rubbish (WHY?!), they also stock JWB, Arden Grange etc so can buy from there if needed although it is more expensive than the website.

Exactly. :(

I have to say that ordering online appears to be cheaper if you can afford to buy in bulk. I've had to get more organised and actually work out what I need and how long it will last since going onto raw. Bit of a pain but worth it.
