Please admin - this is not advertising of any kind...

OK, so I am a bit bored tonight and playing with an idea... There have been so many 'how much' posts on here and clearly it's hard to value a horse. I know from having asked the question and getting wildly different responses...

So I was thinking - something I do as part of my job is pricing analysis (basically, developing a tool that lets you put in lots of variables, and then comes up with a price - usually we do this for retail products etc). I could make a similar tool for valuing horses. It would be a web-based questionnaire, probably about 10 to 15 questions, which would come up with a price. Not sure yet how accurately it would work as there are so many variables involved.

Not sure either how you would access it... would you be willing to go to a website and pay a small fee to value a horse you are selling or buying? Or would it be a nice toy to have on the main advertising sites, which would be there free for the sake of attracting buyers and sellers to the site?

Would it be of interest to anyone?

Thanks for any thoughts! I am now trying to compile as much data as possible from the ads (in H&H of course) to see if it can be done...

Might have to vary it at different times of year though. As in, coming up to show season= often more expensive vs coming into winter= very cheap, please someone take it!

To be honest i'm not sure on how accurate it would be, a horse is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. For example i know an unbroken 8y.o. who is a handful at times and likes to rear. She is worth many thousands though because she has good arab breeding. But most people on here would probably say she was worth about 1000 tops.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm not too worried about the number of variables as there are ways of getting round this if you ask the right questions. Seasonality could be factored in, and make regular changes to account for market trends and so on. The main issue is collecting data - it's a pain trawling through the ads to compile it all, and the main flaw here is that the price on adverts is the asking not selling price...

Really it would be a rough guide - there are always going to be random factors that affect the price hugely, like a particularly bad vice, or exceptional breeding in a mare that is otherwise worthless. It would just be a way of assessing your horse in relation to others in the market - which we all do when we look through adverts, but this is just a bit more systematic and less manual.

Ho hum - can you tell I'm spending my days with a 4 month old child, and getting a bit stir crazy?

Thanks for the feedback.

Angela I reckon the way to go is to develop you own web page for this, populate with google adwords, buy some adwords for 'how much' + 'horse' 'pony' 'saddle' so it appears at the top on every HHO 'how much?' post - and should hopefully provide you with a steady income stream.
