On the topic of coloureds......

Why don't coloureds have dark legs? It may just be me, but we are stabled at a stud that has had a load of coloured foals this year and a few last, and none of them had dark legs, which lead me to look at coloureds for sale and stallions, all of which have white legs! Anybodyelse noticed?
 
My daughter always had grey ponies and I swore I wasn't buying a grey horse because of the hassle of trying to keep them clean for shows etc - all that washing - then we ended up with a coloured horse with white legs. Even more of a problem to keep clean!! Dark legs would be so much easier!!
 
The gene that is responsible for 'coloured' horses = tobiano is regonised visually by not only the white patches on the body but also the white legs. Very rare in deed to get 1 dark leg on a tobaino

There is a different gene more commonally seen in American Paint horses called frame overo which gives a form of white patches on the body but usually with dakr legs
 
I have also never seen one and will be looking out!

I have had coloureds all my life and it has never crossed my mind that they all have white legs!

There was a wonderful American paint horse with black legs at the WES championships last year. She looked beautiful - like she was wearing dark stockings and MUCH more practical. If I ever get a paint horse (OH is very anti!) dark legs will be on the shopping list!
 
Mine has white legs, he would be perfect with colour down to his knees and hocks and white stockings. He has a black mane and tail, but I personally think coloureds look strange with solid coloured legs?!
 
Funny i had not noticed either. You would think as we all spend so much time washing them we would all know? Agree a black tail is a must though!
