On tv now - grey pearl

Watching it now....they have just announced she was put to sleep after injuring herself fatally when going down in the stalls. Poor girl.

Such a sad freak accident, they got her front gate opened pretty quick as well, so it wasnt any slow response, she just couldnt get up. I guess she must have done the damage as she went down, though lord knows why that happened to start with. who knows, she could have had a seizure or anything. Poor girl RIP Grey Pearl.

For those why like to come on here and slag off racing, this type of accident could have happened in a horsebox or trailer and Im sure it does every week.

Such a shame...I was at Newmarket yesterday...
I really hope the media doesn't latch onto 'another racehorse killed' though.
Thoughts with all the connections concerned.

Echo Princess Jess and she was just 5/10 mins away from NEH (my friend was the racecourse vet there today) so she had the best chance for survival. Such a shame, but could have happened anywhere.

Very sad, but handled well by Channel 4 and the racecourse staff I felt. I would be very interested to know exactly what happened as I haven't seen anything quite like it before. My thoughts to all the horse's connections, but at least they know she was in the hands of a top veterinary team who did everything possible.

well said

I have to say I think they took far too long to divert their camera's and get the screens up when it was obvious that the little filly was in trouble. But she was in the best possible hands in what appears to be a most bizarre set of circumstances.

The screens though take time to put up when they were trying to concentrate on seeing if she could get up, and if she had been able to get up (eg if just bruised or winded) it would have been dangerous for the screens to be there, as often when they get up in that scenario they sort of explode up and away.

I also feel that to some extent the camera people thought she was going to get up and probably stayed on it longer because of that. And there is an element that I was happy they did (tho happy isnt the right word) I have a duty to see it so that when I say I support racing, it is from a position of seeing things like this ie full knowledge - although this sad event could have happened in any enclosed space.

I found it odd that when they were focussed on he horses behind, they all suddenly spooked. It would take a sudden noisesuch as a gun to cause that reaction. At that moment I thought she had been pts. Very sad for all, but as ever with all horses accidents do happen nomatter how safe things are made.:(. Personally I thought the coverage did well, as initially it looked as though she was likely to get up once the front gates had been opened. She wasn't distressed, at one point I noticed her start to pick at the grass.

They wouldn't have used a gun whilst the horses were still milling around at the start. Most horses that get put down on the racecourse are done with the lethal injection. Some do get a bullet but never when there are other horses still on the track and especially not at such a close proximitey.

I've been on the receiving end of the tv camera when my horse was down - thankfully he was only badly winded but all I wanted to do was to tell them to sod off and focus on something else!
